I also use a Thermarest pillow. If they leave them out for a day they really expand. It's too big for me so I cut a hole in the seam, took some stuffing out and then sewed it back up. Packs up to a size a little bigger than a nalgene.

Looking for pillow recommendations, i have one of the tiny blow up ones that takes up no space but it slides all around and isn't the most comfortable. Any recommendations for a softer pillow that takes up very little room in the bag?

I add a pillow case to my bag and put that around the stuff sack with my clothes. I know that doesn't work for everyone but the pillowcase makes it feel more like home for me :)

I use an Arrowhead Equipment Cub . I an a hammock camper and this small pillow is just enough.
If you are sleeping on the ground, you might consider the Bear . The shock cord is intended to keep it from getting lost in a hammock but, could be utilized to keep the pillow fixed in place for ground dwelling as well.

If you know someone who sews, a regular pillow can be cut down to travel size. That is what I use. Beats any store bought inflatable.

I have a sleeping bag with a hood. I don't need the hood for summer camping, but I tuck my inflatable pillow into it so it stays put through the night.

Thermarest fan here. The bigger ones do pack a bit large but work better than other things I've tried. I've found that as I get older I'm less tolerant of sacrificing comfort to save a little space and/or weight.

Take your pillow from home. If you had a better pillow than what is on your bed, you would have already starting using that at home. Bag it to keep it dry.

I tried stuffing clothes in a stuff sack and it was ok in cold weather (when I had fluffier, thicker stuff with me) but I hated it in warm weather. I tried a couple cheap options and did not like them either.
Two years ago I switched to a Nemo FIllo and really liked it. Only downside is when I first got it it came with a strong chemical smell. After doing some research I found several reviews mentioned it but that it would go away. I simply took the foam out and washed it all in some Dawn detergent then hung it all outside for 2-3 days in the sun. Smell gone. Sleeping happy.

I like the MyPillow Roll and goanywhere pillow. Rolls up small and tucks into its own pillowcase.

I've come to like my Exped inflatable Air Pillow M. Has a kind of nap on it to reduce slipping - not perfect - and I let a lot of air out when I lay down. (Can't help but fully inflate with their schnozzel.)
Hadn't looked at their products in a while but the DOWN PILLOW M looks good.

We just use My Pillow travel size pillows. They can roll up and stuff down pretty good in the stuff sack.

Not sure this meets your size requirements, but hoofta, is it comfy.

I agree with the OP about an air filled pillow not being as comfortable. It took several attempts for me to find that wouldn't slide out from under my head. I am currently using and happy with the Nemo Fillo. I found it also helped to change the amount of air in the pillow. For me, about 2/3's full makes for a pillow that sits still better.

Exactly! I made these silpoly pillow stuff sack where you can invert them for the fleece to be on the inside when traveling, and outside when sleeping, for ultralight backpacking. They have worked well and will continue to be used.
For canoe camping, I prefer the medium Thermarest Compressible Pillow and the pillow stuff sack for the luxury of 2 pillows.

I use an air pillow partially inflated with a resized cotton pillowcase. (glue the hem if you can't sew) It doesn't slip around nearly as much. I turn a lot during sleep.

I love my Exped Mega Pillow. Almost had to fight off my family last year since the ones the outfitter gave us weren’t even close to as nice or as comfortable! Picked up 3 more this year for the rest of the family.
It’s a blow up style huge when blown up and comfortable but deflates nicely and is relatively small once deflated.

A pillow can make or break my night no matter where I am at. The best pillow that I have ever found for ME that I use at home and while out in a tent is made by Coop Home Goods. They make regular bed pillows and I just found out and purchased a camping/travel pillow of the same. It's an awesome pillow. Pack slightly larger than your typical camping pillow but I feel it is well worth it.

I used an inflatable pillow for years. It always slid around and just generally wasn't that comfortable. I tried a stuff sack with clothes, but that definitely didn't work for me.
Last year I saw a small, cheap "camp" pillow (basically a 1/4 sized regular pillow with a stuff sack) at a random big box store that sells (cheap and crappy) camping equipment. I took it on two trips last year and loved it! It takes up a little more space in the pack, but still doesn't weigh much. Way more comfortable than the inflatable ever was... and it can go in the washer when the trip is over.

I use a memory foam back pillow. I think it’s actually supposed to attach to a chair for lumbar support, but it was $15 at Sierra so I gave it a try. About 10-12 inches wide x long. Best sleep I’ve had in a tent so far! I have lots of neck issues, so comfy pillow is important to me. It actually packed down pretty small in a small compression bag and could’ve gotten smaller if I used an even smaller size compression bag. Pretty light too, considering! I’ve tried the inflatable pillows and given them to my kids because they just didn’t work for me

Had a Trekology inflateable, which worked well when tucked into my bags hood. But it started to leak last year and I replaced it with the Nemo Fillo Elite Ultralight. The Nemo felt too flat in comparison and I need to put a sweater under it to boost the height, especially if on my side. I'll probably go back to one of the $20 inflatable ones on Amazon like the Trekology, which also have pad straps to better hold in place under a bag.

I had a camping partner that raved about his inflatable pillow and was so sure that I'd love one too and so insistent that I have one that he bought one for me. It did not work for me. The main difference was that he had the hooded bag and I did not. His hood kept the pillow in place whereas my pillow was constantly sliding around and I kept waking up with no pillow under my head.

I use my Airplane travel memory foam neck pillow. It works great! I hold it together with its own Velcro strap such that it cradles my head as I lay on it. I also have many air pillows that I dislike because I can hear my heart beats all night long.

I have to agree, this is one of the best pillows I have brought on a trip. And, it compresses down very small. If you don't mind packing a big bigger pillow, I would recommend the Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow.
