Anyone use a mixing bowl? We make pancakes each trip as well as a cake (carrot this past week). We typically pack in a gallon size zip lock, add liquids, mix and pour into the frybake... but it is still a mess. I can't get all of the batter out, so I'm stuck hauling it in the trash bag. I've thought of cutting a corner of the bag to squeeze it out, but that creates a secondary problem getting my trash bag filled with goop. I continually smash the trash down, so I try to keep it clean. I have snowpeak titanium bowls we eat out of, and was wondering if they make a super light weigh mixing bowl.... I know, ridiculous "problem" to have. I think I may try cutting the corner next time, instead of trying to pour pancake batter out of the top.

We take a one quart measuring container that has a pour spout and a lid. While traveling the container is stuffed with things like dish towels or plastic stacking cups. The pour spout makes it easy to pour out pancakes and it is great for measuring puddings.

We also have a Stanley stainless steel pot that carries 2 cups and a tiny butane/propane stove while traveling. This makes a great way to make coffee in the morning or just hot water for hot chocolates as well as can be used to mix things.

We use the Ziploc Twist 'n Loc containers. They nest well and are cheap, lightweight, and have leakproof lids. We eat out of the smaller 16oz containers and bring 1 of the larger 32oz ones to use as a mixing bowl for things like pancakes.

Cut the corner like you said, when the squeeze bag is as empty as it is going to get, stuff it in a sandwich size ziploc to contain any ooze, then put it in the garbage.

Or use a piece of duct tape to seal the corner.

I like the GSI Fairshare mugs. 1 qt. Mix, store (safely - won't spill in pack), eat, and drink from them - and cook with cozy. I see they have improved the hande and added a cozy since I last looked at them, and should pack better.

I always make pancakes and muffins (using an Outback Oven) and I use a sandwich size or quart size ziplock bag, adding water to the dry mix in the bag and then sealing the bag and mashing it around to get the right mix. Once it is mixed I cut a small corner of the bag, just big enough to squeeze out the mix. If I'm making pancakes I simply set the bag in the bowl with the cut corner at the top. The mix squeezes out nicely into the pan without adding dishes to wash. When you're done let the hungriest, youngest, member of your group suck out any remaining mix then just place the now flat and empty bag into your trash.

Why can't you wash your ziploc out like you would a mixing bowl? Or when you almost have it empty place it on a flat smooth surface and using a rubber spatula on the outside, squeeze the remaining batter towards the corner you cut off.

What about using one of your cooking pots?
Or rinsing the bag you're using?

I love my pancakes. I’ve tried mixing my both my pancakes and pizza dough in plastic bags a couple times, and I hate it. I found it hard to mix, pour, and too much stuck inside. I’ve abandoned the idea and now just gladly mix in one of my small pots. If you are going to wash out a bag, why not just wash out the pot and not waste a bag?

Yes, Agreed! I should have stated that is also a reason for the mixing bowl.

The pot I use is the GSI Kettle, which I really like, but the top slants in and is smaller than the rest of the pot, so creates a little difficulty cleaning, would rather not have "goop" inside that I need to clean, especially with raw egg.

With that said, I'll probably end up with the cut-a-hole-in-the-corner route

+1 recommendation for the GSI Fairshare mug. The original uninsulated version with the plastic handle was great and I tripped with it for years, but when I stepped on and broke the handle last fall I picked up the Fairshare mug II which has a fabric handle and the removable insulated sleeve. It packs easier without the plastic handle and it worked great keeping my oatmeal warm on the 53 mile loop that I completed yesterday. When tripping, my Snow Peak 600 ml titanium coffee cup and Trangia spirit stove nest inside. It would work great as a mixing bowl.

I often use one of our titanium bowls as a mixing bowl. I usually use mine and then just eat my meal out of it because I don't mind any residue mix. Then I only have to clean it once at the end of the meal.
