Our group is looking at going wood only next year (assuming no fire ban). We used a Kelly Kettle last year in September (after they lifted the ban). It worked very well for boiling water.

Has anyone used a EcoZoom Dura Rocket Stove? It is heavy at 12 pounds, but eliminates bringing propane or butane. Any thoughts?

Why not just use the fire grate and an open fire? I'm sure this stove is a little more efficient, but hauling huge stoves seems crazy.

We bought two of the Kelly Kettle cooking systems. Both have the hobo stoves with them. Worked really well.

Did you utilize the hobo stove as part of your kelly kettle? It’s my favorite twig stove out there.

12 pounds for a stove? No thanks. Maybe for car camping or a river trip with no portages.

I have a Solo Stove, but I'd never travel without a fueled stove, and I find the Solo Stove is being left home altogether for backcountry trips as mine is a larger "campfire" size which, at 2.2 lb, weighs more than my Kovea Spider (or two) plus fuel. Relying solely on a twig stove is not a good idea to me. What if you just can't manage to find dry wood? What if the area you are in seems dangerously dry?

If you insist on wood and if you're already packing a Kelly Kettle anyway, it's practically a no-brainer to go with their hobo stove conversion instead of any other twig stove.

you are right about the EcoZoom. Will probably get one to use here at the house, or when doing local camping.

Will also order a Kovea Syder as a backup for next trip.

I have a Kelly Kettle Ultimate Base Camp kit. My tripping partner has the Kelly Kettle Ultimate Scout Kit. Last year he brought the Scout and we used it to boil all our hot water needs for coffee and hot choclate. That alone saved on a lot of propane.

This year I am going to bring mine as well. I noticed this last trip I had gone through 1 1/2 of the green propane tanks after only one dinner and a breakfast. Then I found out one of the guys had brought a cofffee pot/perculator and for dinner and breakfast would "perk" a full pot of coffee for 30 minutes, then turn the stove to simmer for the next hour.

He gets moved to the Kelly Kettle next year.

So far I like this stove. Simple to assemble (unfold and add some cross beams) and use. I would buy the titanium version if I were you.

We love the kelly kettle hobo stove because it runs on readily available items such as pine cones, twigs and other floor debris like all twig stoves. We keep a good supply of twigs under the tarp/ lean. The only day in jeopardy of having a problem is the put-in day if it were to rain/ moisture. We’ve been rocking this setup (only source) for about three years now. I would highly recommend to others. And yes, we like this more than the open fire due to the efficiency and the available debris around camp.

Ocky- I believe they have two sizes available, we have always brought the larger (trekker?) size- is that what you have used?

I have an older rocket stove from Stove Tec. I have taken it car camping. I would not want to portage it. The stove also retains heat and takes awhile to cool down.

If you are interested in rocket stoves, you might want to look at the silver fire rocket stove.

In general I agree with other posters that if you already have the basecamp along, you might just want to use the hobo stove that comes with.

mschi772 mentioned the solo stove. You might check out the "titan" that nests in the "1800" pot.

I remember reading something about the solo stove possibly being a knock off of the titanium bush buddy.
