adam: "I went with a modified special in cherry with a varnished paddle and then I oiled the shaft with linseed oil. "
I did the same with the handle/shalt in linseed oil and a leather wrap and the blade in varnish. I have no regrets.

I have two Ray Kettlewell and two Fishell modified otter tails (no custom logo) and love them in lake country. I have an RK rays special but used it once in my 16’ w/c prospector and felt like it had such a long lever I might flip the canoe! It’s hanging on the wall next to some antique snow shoes. Great paddles!

The paddle is not good for shallow water. However the tip is strong and can hold up to strategic contact with rocks.
Adam that for making the Logo it made me purchase smooth and easy and the paddle looks awesome.
I went with cherry wood since that is one of my favorites. Light weight but strong.
I personally find this paddle far superior than other paddles for solo canoeing and stern paddling. I can guide my canoe much easier than other paddles.
At first I wasn’t sure if it lived up to its hipe but I switched with my canoe partner so they could try it and as soon as I started paddling with their standard paddle I immediately felt the difference and knew I made the right purchase.

CanoeViking: "I just got this before my trip and it did great it’s got power when need and easy on the muscles and shoulders.
It’s a Ray Special with a 50/50 paddle shaft ratio.
Anyone else have one of these? "
What type of wood did you end up choosing?

I have a Modified Special with a varnished finish and a Ray Special with the oiled finish. I have had these for about 5 years. They are by far my favorite paddles.

schweady: "Loving the custom labeling. Process? " I just called Greg from Fishell Paddles and asked if he could put the BWCA logo and my handle name on it and he said yes. (For an extra charge, but it was worth it to me.)
I believe somebody from this forum has had that logo used before, so he had it already saved. I didn’t have to send him the file.

Nice looking paddle. I’ve never tried one with such a long blade. How do you handle it in shallow water, especially if it is an uneven rocky bottom.

I had this created. Anyone is welcome to order one with the logo. They are nicely laser engraved.

As a fellow wood paddle guy, I have an appreciation for wood paddles and the people that choose to use them. That cherry looks very nice.
