From photos, the Tuscon bars look just in like the Thule bars that came in on my Outback. (I think called wing bars?) In any case I was able to buy 78" Thule Probars at Canoecopia. They can be cut to any length. I switch back and forth easily.

Hello everyone,

I hope all are well. This is a somewhat specific question regarding transporting two canoes/kayaks. I will be purchasing a new Hyundai Tucson (2023 which should be similar to the 2022) that has rails but no cross bars and a panoramic moonroof. I want to utilize long cross bars (70'+) to transport two watercraft that could accommodate gunwale brackets and a kayak J-rack. I don't mind spending some money upfront for some quality options so was looking into Thule and Yakima.

The issue is, I don't know exactly what I might need. I found long cross bars on each website but know I probably need some adapter to attach the bars to the rails. I also don't know what rails actually accommodate gunwale brackets or j-racks.

Could anyone provide any expertise that they might have? Or if you had manufacturers that might be more economical (aside from DYI, wood etc.) I would be interested in that.

Also, if anyone has a Tucson: I was wondering if the silly shark fin antennae in the middle of the roof has caused anyone issues transporting watercraft.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read.

Regards,

Most of those adapters (towers) are specific to the rails or mounts on your vehicle and also the shape of cross bars (round, square or aero). Manufactures usually have a tool to match you with the right setup on their website.

A note on bar lengths: if you want to carry two boats you may have to buy longer bars than the manufacturer recommends (I think this has something to do with laws about how far accessories are allowed to extend from your car). If you're getting oversize bars, try to find a system that's easy for you to take on and off when you need it–they have a painful tendency to be exactly where your head is when getting in and out of the vehicle.

If you Go into the Yakima website, They have something called “fit my vehicle” or something like that. It’ll ask you what kind of rails you have on the car – flush mount or raised – and then it’ll tell you what kind of “towers” are compatible with your rails once you have the towers then you can add whatever length bars you need. It will likely tell you you need Ridgeline Towers and a specific set of clips.

Why not contact a Thule or Yakima dealer? They should be able to advise you on what you need.
