NikonF5user: "Has anyone tried using any of the blended gasoline options in their Whisperlite? Thinking specifically of E15 and/or E85 (or similar ethanol / gasoline blends). I would love find a more sustainable fuel source for my Whisperlite Universal. How on earth is E85 a sustainable product as some define sustainable? I also would never put a gasoline product in any stove I carry. |

The idea is quite counter productive, particularly in the amounts used. You waste much more fuel (in poor driving habits) simply traveling to your destination, that you will use for cooking in camp. I/2 gallon is probably way more than the average BWCA trip needs. Personally I do not use 1/2 a gallon in a year of camping (I'm retired and camp a lot). Your using an EV? Last I looked only 12% of all power produced in the US is from renewable sources. Even if possible to use all renewable to charge your vehicle that reduces the amount available to the rest of the power grid. Where is E15/30/85 made without using more petroleum in production than fuel produced? All that corm is grown on farms using petroleum fuel, farm life essentials/prepping the land/planting the corn/harvesting the corn/storing the corn/delivering it to an ethanol production plant/transportation and delivery to fuel blenders/distribution for sale, on and on till you burn it. That is not accounting for the loss of tillable land for food production. butthead |

butthead: "Automotive fuels contain additives that are more poisonous when burned than the much more purified white gasoline, Coleman/Crown and such. They also have a tendency to burn dirty. Love it! Butthead for climate Czar! |

Presumably E15 blend would work in the stove, but would burn less hot/efficiently than the stove would on white gas. I would expect E85 to burn very poorly, if at all. Best bet really is white gas stove fuel. Brian |

Thanks! |

BrianDay: "MSR stoves won't run on alcohol. I have tried, just to experiment. Or, make an alcohol stove, cook over wood, and live with the choice. butthead |

Clean and safe equate to sustainable to me. I have both Kerosene and gasoline in my garage and I carry the replacement jets everywhere I take the stove, but I doubt I'd ever resort to either of those fuels. I will go out pretty far of my way to find white gas. |
