I did a "ditch kit" test a little while ago and had terrible results trying to get a fire going in wet, windy conditions using both Bic liters and stick matches. Looks like a perfect solution to what could be a life- or - death situation.

If you get the flint or striker wet, a lighter not work until it dries out

They are amazing and burn hotter than normal matches, thus easier to start a fire.

I have been using a SOTO POCKET TORCH XT for extended canoe trips up north for years.
Quality built. Reaches 2,300 degrees and gives you a hot flame in windy conditions. Extender pull out feature to safely light fires or stoves.
When using the Soto adapter, you can fill your Soto Torch XT using your Stoves Butane.
I always bring an extra Bic Lighter and/or aforementioned UCO Matches as a backup when paddling in Quetico.

Yeah, we carry these storm matches for ditch kit and for use in wet conditions when lighting a fire gets harder. We now light our stoves with a piezoelectric sparker. MSR sells a nice one. But we started with buying ones that were spare parts for stoves that have one built in. That greatly reduced our use of matches on a trip and is simpler than a lighter for us. We still use regular stick matches under most conditions for a fire but I agree that the quality has gone downhill over the years and so I'm glad not to rely on them.

I have been carrying those for close to 30 years. They’ve been in my traveling camp kit for guaranteed flame. They got this fire going last August on Iron after a deluge rain on a travel morning. Though it took three matches to get it established.

I couldn't believe how hot they burn and how long. There are other brands close to these. But a must-have for outdoors people. yes, an awesome waterproof box also.

stick matches are not what they use to be.

I still have the waterproof match container from the Boy Scout store from a long, long time ago. Dip the self strike matches in paraffin. Self strikers are getting hard to find.

I just carry several Bic lighters in my gear.
