I would not use rope/lashing for the wood bars, some bolted hardware as suggested would be better idea. I use these as well, they work, easy solution.

I've also started using the 2x4s method recently with great success, but seeing stuff like this around town is one of the things I love about canoe country.

I've used u bolts to attach cross bars directly to the luggage rack. It worked fine for me.

You might consider marking the points where the canoe edges would sit and notch the 2 x 4. Might make things less prone to moving around. Since it's cheap wood, no great loss.

Alright, so I have a set of yakima bars for my vehicle but I typically only carry one canoe or two kayaks. This summer's trip however I will be bringing to canoes, and my bars aren't quite wide enough. I'm thinking about just lashing a couple of 2x4's that are wide enough directly to the roof rack, instead of investing in a new set of bars (just don't carry two canoes frequently enough to justify the cost), I know I've seen it done before, but wanted to see if anyone had other suggestions. We will be driving from the metro area.

We rented these canoes from Spirit of the Wilderness in Ely a few years back. They are the ones who loaded the canoes this way. However they strongly recommended driving no faster than 45-50 mph. It worked fine for us as we only had to drive the Fernberg road. I definitely wouldn't want to drive much further than that with a load like this. :)

Your idea is what I'd recommend as well.

Yep, in the past I've done the 2x4 with a Yakima. Get a 2-3 U-bolts per bar/2x4 that are long enough to go around the bar and through the 2x4.
I finally just got a longer bar.

I've done the very thing you have suggested, and it worked well. Don't do what TB is suggesting in his photo.

I have seen people with the 2x4s so it seems it works well.

I use 2 old barbell bars... because I have 2 old barbell bars and it works fine.

boat seems to move less on the 2x4 wood than the rack itself. Easy cheap solution.

I use U-bolts with my car, but have used same 2x4s on utility trailer and someone else's car by lashing the 2x4s instead of bolting. Both were rock solid.
