I have two packs that I generally use. I have a 5500ci Alps Mountaineering Denali which I use for long trips or trips where I'm not packing as light as I could, and a 2300ci Kelty Courser for shorter trips or trips where I'm packing as light as possible. I like to go backpacking as well as canoeing so I haven't bothered with a canoe pack yet but I also think the internal frame backpacking packs are much more comfortable anyways. I can portage a canoe just fine while wearing the courser and when I partner up with someone that doesn't have a good pack I just bring both and split the gear between the two packs so that we can still single portage. The person with the Courser pack also portages the canoe and the other person carries the heavier Denali pack.

Pack size? I use two #4 packs, a navy sea bag and a smaller Duluth pack day bag

I forgot to mention I was able to strap up my tent and sleeping bag to the outside of my pack. it has straps for a gun or bow so that worked out

I recently started using a NorthFace Crestone 75. It's 4300 to 4450 cubic inches. extremely durable and very comfy!
When first started backpacking and going to the BWCA I was using a daypack!!! Now I opt for more pack space and can haul all my food in the Crestone 75 in a small pack. When I had the daypack I clearly needed a seperate pack for food.

I have carried Kondos for years and love them. I just purchased the Outfitter Special and am so happy with it! The price direct from Kondos is the cheapest anywhere and they are very easy to work with!

Slightly off topic- I'm needing a new pack and planning on the Osprey Kestrel 68. I usually use my kayak in the B Dubbs so I don't want a HUGE pack, but I also want one with size enough to keep 5-6 days worth of gear. Anyone have any quick reviews of the kestrel 68, or suggestions for a different pack to fit my needs? Should note I have done some research, but there are no reviews of anything bigger than the Kestrel 48 on backpackgeartest.org which is my favorite review site.

Standard issue medium size u.s. military ruck. Never seen the need for anything larger. Been tripping up north for years. But I don't bring the whole living room with me lol.. I do have a regular size back pack ( like for school books or day hiking) for my food ruck. We each carry a pack that size for food .

For my solo trips I use a CCS Pioneer pack that is 4700 cu.in. and is plenty big for my gear. I also use a food pack but if need be I could cut out extras and bring everything food included in one pack. Find a pack by comparing in person different packs or renting packs then save what you need for that pack.

Outdooraddict, 1950 ci pack seems pretty small. What do you pack in it? Is this a personal pack only or do you pack some of the group equipment in it too?
I use a Granite Gear Superior One. I think it is about 7400 cubic inches. I also have a duluth cruiser that I sometimes use. I think that one is about 3300 cubic inches. When I go in a group I am packing a lot of the group equipment in these also.

I have a badlands superday pack that i got to use while hunting, but used it last year on my first trip in the bwca, its 1950 ci. im thinking a bigger pack would be nice, but it did the trick with a 4 man group. i am planning on just leaving the hydration bladder out this next trip, wasted space for tge most part.

I also solo and use a GG Solo and, starting this season, a 60l blue barrel. This seems like alot of space and it is but I think the system will work well for me....

How many pack manufacturers offer lifetime warranties? I know Duluth pack and osprey do. Is this pretty much standard these days?

GG #4, blue barrel 30l or 60l depending on how many people are going in and for how long. Then an off brand pack I couldn't even tell you a brand name on it but it has 40+ trips on it and it's still going strong. That's usually enough. We base camp so we aren't moving around every day. We bring the extras so we're more comfortable.

+1 on the Kondos rec. I have one of their 30L barrel harnesses and a few other non-pack accessories (griddle cover, utensil wrap, etc) and everything is very well made (in Minnesota!). I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Kondos pack and like ducks said they are reasonably-priced.

I have that same Badlands pack and it's a fine pack, but I haven't quite found for what. It's too big for a hunting day pack, and I doubt you could carry enough meat to make it worthwhile to try. It's too small for an overnight pack, and won't even due for a 2nd tripping pack on that count. I'm not sure where it fits. I generally bring one #3 Frost River pack for each person, then a smaller day pack. I've been using a Cliff Signature pack the last couple trips, but it seems a tad small too. Still searching for the perfect 2nd pack.

i did just fine with it last year, but would not have been so happy if we didn't have prefect weather the whole time. i need something i can actually get some gear in, and my sleeping bag.

I've got a Kelty Pacific Crest 5000 that I've had since '98 and haven't had to replace a single pack-pin or zipper on it...still looks great. Love Kelty packs. I'd have to say that all the packs listed in this thread are solid packs, too.

I solo canoe as well as solo backpack and for both I use a Deuter AirContact 65+10. Works out to be around 4000 cubic inches of volume. Price isn't backbreaking (har, har) and it is still pretty light. I have used it on regular weekend trips as well as a couple of two week trips now as well.

I use a backpack that was leaning against the dumpster when I lived in an apartment. I sewed up the ripped compartment with fireline and have used it on two trips now. I think it's limited capacity helps me to limit what I pack. But then I also bring a small drybag/backpack for food, a small drybag for day clothes and snacks, a coleman suitcase stove, a widemouth thermos for my camera and other small items that must stay dry, a blueprint tube for my two piece broken down rods, a leech bucket, seat cushion and probably a few other things I'm forgetting. Yes, we do triple portage. No, it doesn't bother me a bit. :-)
