Thanks guys. The pool noodle/pipe insulation is actually what I use on the roof rack when I'm transporting it, and just lined it up with the supports b/c I could. :) I've got some closed cell foam sheet I may cover it with, but that 2x Isn't going to hurt my aluminum gunwales.... any worse than they already are, that is.

Thanks again everybody.
The door hinge to pin it open is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that.

Trying to free up some space in the pole barn, I made a canoe rack that bolts to the wall but should I need the room I can take the canoes outside and fold the supports out of the way. The plan is to make another support that just sits on the floor that has a sort of H pattern that will slip over the 4x6 wall studs, so one canoe will but under this fold away. I'll prolly make another fold-away version above this one for the kayak. These are 2x8s that I cut on an angle and took the off-cut and attached near the hinge end for 2 reasons: 1. it gave a wider base for the rack to bear against the wall, and 2. the shortest lag bolts I could find would have stuck thru just one layer. That's a big 10" hinge that I'm sure is plenty strong to hold up the canoe, the racks fold in opposite directions but I doubt it matters and they are held 90ยบ to the wall with the big turnbuckles, feels rock solid.

Nice job redo. Your setup looks like it could hold a ton.

Nice job and great pictures. Just one suggestion. I would mount the pipe insulation cushions on the canoe rack and not on the canoe gunwales. You wouldn't have to worry about getting the cushions situated just right on the canoe gunwales

I thought maybe that you used the noodle on your vehicle, but you know you never can be sure.

A simple door hinge w/removable pin (like on every door in your house) would have worked as a hold open too...for future consideration to the twist barrel hooks.
Nice job.
Now add a screen door spring on the inside by your hinge to hold them back when not in use!
