Definitely do-able in a single day, especially if you've been doing similar length days on the SHT.

Getting close... I didn't investigate too thoroughly but, I would surmise about 3 inches. However, there were still open spots at various points around the lake.

Absolutely. Back on the road, we looked at each other and said (in unison): "Whose great idea was THAT?!"

After regularly hiking 12-15 miles per day on the Superior Hiking trail, could one do this loop in a day, or is it really best served on an overnight?

A strenuous but not especially long day. In August this year I averaged about the same pace per mile on the Angleworm as I did last year on the segment of the SHT from the 270 overlook to Grand Marais (excluding Lakewalk).

Definitely doable as a day hike, but it's such a beautiful hike I like to spend at least one night out.

Day hiked the Angleworm Lake trail for some black Friday exercise.

The Echo trail was buzzing with activity as most of the trailheads had multiple vehicles parked in the lots. There was a fresh dusting of snow on top of the existing 3-4 inches in the woods. It appeared that someone had pulled a toboggan across just prior to my entry.

The trail was in excellent shape, as the only real concern was a few sections of the elevated boardwalk (at about the midpoint of the portage) that was in disrepair. No serious problem getting across but, the rotted wood in a few spots tests a persons confidence in the structure and will become a real issue in the very near future.

As mentioned, I followed a fresh toboggan track the entire distance. It was kind of surprising at the junction of the trails that, while the toboggan headed west towards the lake, there were multiple other individual tracks heading off towards Trease Lake etc. Lots of people in the woods!

I walked down to the lake and traced the shoreline to the nearest campsite there. The lake was completely froze over but there appeared to be a line that wasn't quite sealed up. By this time most of the cloud cover had pushed off so, the distant snowy shorelines glistened with the mostly unobstructed illumination of the quickly descending orb in the sky. Not wanting to intrude on the people I presumed were camping, I returned from whence I came.

Thankful for the experience. Great day to be in the woods.

next: This is verifiably nice... I wonder how long it is...
next: Hmmm...
next: Um... I mean, it was cool, but I think, um, is that the turn?
next: When will it end?
next: Make it stop
next: for the love of God
next: ughhhh!!!! I just want the woods
Final: I hate that effing Lake Walk

Beautiful! Looks like a good time. I assume the ice isn't thick enough to be reliable right now?
