I was under the impression that they only gave out one PMA permit per week.
I did not see any restrictions on numbers.
I will look again.

I have a permit for PMA # 4 East side for next week and my son and I planned on staying inside the zone for a night or two. "

Let me know what you find out because I’d like to know if I’m wrong so I can stop giving crappy advice. lol.

One group per pma zone, per night, with pma permit from rangers. Anyone can travel through, no permit needed. (Sunday lake is in zone#5 of PMA#3)

Angleworm to gull is usually as far as I go the 1st day, then gull through gun-wagosh, into crooked can be done on second day. You can loop through sundial pma(pma#3) or do a there and back through wagosh. I like to get back to home lake or angleworm for last night and an easy exit.

Heading into EP #20 in a few weeks. Wondering if anyone has done this bad boy and if it is possible to get to Curtain Falls from this point and what the best route would be possibly with round tripping back to EP #20. Thanks!

Thank you so far. I was actually looking at the route that went North from Gun, Chippewa and into Sunday Bay on Crooked. Anyone done that one? Thanks again!

I did a similar loop this June. One tandem with two guys and a dog, single portaging. We picked up our permit at Piragis around 7pm day of, and hiked the Angleworm trail on our first day. Didn't even get the boat wet. Day two was easy, over to Beartrap. On day three we ran the length of the beartrap river to Peterson Bay on Iron, up to the falls and then to a late camp on Crooked. Everything went well but it ended up being a long day due to getting a little turned around in Peterson Bay followed by an absolute lack of campsite availability until Sunday Bay. Day four was another tough one, takng the route from Friday Bay down through Chippewa to Gun and ending up on Home for an easy Day Five back to the car at the Angleworm Trail. Portages were easy to find the whole way (even in the PMA) and not overly technical, but water levels were up and quite a few were swampy. I've heard that Trease-Angleworm is the one to avoid in this area.

muddyfeet: "Went angleworm>beartrap>iron 2 yrs ago. Fantastic route and good solitude- if you don't mind portaging. Beartrap portage is easy to find and navigate. From what research I did, I thought the Sunday bay portage is no longer there/difficult to find. We came out at Stewart lake entry and had a bike stashed in the woods to get back to the car at angleworm. "

It's there....but you have to look up and lift your gear up a tall rock to get started

Curtain falls to Beartrap/thunder lake area is do-able in one, long day. There are about 11 portages on your way to Iron. The trails were in relatively good shape thanks to some of, I believe, our board members who go through there and brush/clear them. From Mudro up to the Thunder is a good days work but it also can be a first day in (if you feel you are fit and up to it). Good route. A bit rugged but lots of solitude once you are beyond Gun. I have never come in from the Angleworm except to hike the trail in from the lake. Pretty area though.

Yes, it can be done, however, it would be a pretty rugged trip as you will have many portages (some long ones) and you’ll be traveling through a Primitive Management Area (PMA) where portages and campsites are not maintained. If you decide to camp in this PMA, you need to notify the Ranger Station in person because only one traveler per day is allowed to overnight in PMA zones.

The route looks like this: from Angleworm you head north through some small lakes to Thunder Lake, then up through Beartrap Lake and it’s namesake river up to Beartrap Falls which dump into Peterson Bay of Iron Lake. Then up to Curtain from there. You could do out and back, or you could do a loop if you head up into Crooked and take the unmarked portage out of Sunday bay which brings you back to Sunday Lake. I’ve thought about doing this loop before because I like to get away from crowds, you probably won’t see much for people until you get to Iron. Hope this helps.
