No body was there when brother #1 stopped and set up Friday morning. The other two filled with nice quiet folks by the end of the day. The second night we were the only ones there.

LindenTree3: "Eighteen Lake has a hiking trail all the way around it, my fire crew would hike it for PT every now and then." That was one of the reasons it was a go to for me. More things to do when you have a restless kid along.

hexnymph: "Thanks for all the advice. We ended up on Eighteen Lake and did a little touring around the other areas just to see how much traffic was around and looking for grouse. My one brother got a couple grouse. I did a little fishing but nothing to write home about. Colors are starting to get good up there. Mushrooms were bursting everywhere. I found a few I know and hundreds I did not. Had a burger and beer at the Trestle Inn.
It was a nice weekend to get away... the winds were wicked off Superior Friday and Sunday so I only ended up tying on one canoe which got very little use. I was seriously scared for the canoe on top the car crossing the 535 bridge from Duluth to Superior on the way back.

Did you have the campgrounds all to yourself? Eighteen Lake was one of my go to spots years ago. It sounds like fishing hasn’t changed.

Did the trail. That's where my bro got the grouse.

Well, a trip into the wilds didn’t manifest itself this year and for that I am bummed. I rely on a mental and spiritual battery recharge at least once a year. Hopefully my battery doesn’t lose charge before I can make it back in.
As luck would have it, one of my seldom seen brothers is working on the north shore this month. I have arranged to meet him and my other brother for a camping trip this weekend. I’m not sure where we will end up but I’m heading toward the Finland area in a few hours. The plan is pretty loose but I’ll have canoes and fishing gear. Any suggestions? If it’s sensitive you can email…
Thanks, Hex
PS. If you see dude in a gray forester with a couple thoroughly loved Wenonah canoes on top, it just might be me.

I might add that there are also many small driving camping sites in that area. Like Toohey Lake, Fourmile, Hogback Lakes , etc...… Google Superior National forest campsites or pick up a Superior Forest map. Also Wilson Lake 20 miles north of Finland has a good evening walleye bite.

Checkout Wildhurst in Finland. Cabins are around $50 a night. We stay there every winter for our snowmobile trip.

I used to go to Thunderbird Lake--it's about a 3/4 mile portage in there so it doesn't get much traffic...a lot quieter than Timber-Frear. Used to be pretty good walleye fishing too, though I don't know how it's been lately.
