Read your posting on looking for a partner for September 2019. I have 20 plus years in the bwca plus canoes and all the gear. Planning a late May trip but might be able to work in a fall trip too. I will be 55 then and am in great shape. Let me know |

Gravel, Boy that would be nice to go with a "local". Good luck on yer hunt. Speaking of Duluth, I have several items from Duluth Trading and I really like their quality, especially those nylon fleece lined "Dry on the Fly" cargo pants for winter. I have that Browning A-Bolt in .300 Win mag and a new, light mountain rifle Browning X-Bolt Pro in 6.5 Creedmoor but when I lived in Pennsylvania my favorite rifle was a .308 Savage 99 C lever gun. It's now undergoing stock upgrade and a beautiful new barrel, octagonal B/C I like that style. I'll keep it in .308 but was tempted to convert to 6.5 CM. Sometimes the "oldies" like yer 35 Rem. are still excellent guns for certain terrain. Eric B. |

Good to hear that you may consider a fall trip. May is a bit to "buggy" for me. At least that's the situation in eastern Ontario and Quebec. I'll pay for the cost of the rental canoe. I can also do most of the freeze dried food as well. Give me a call. (702) 370-1836 Eric B. |

Just curious what part of Pennsylvania you grew up in? I spent 3 years (my middle school years) living in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, Peters Township area. Welcome to the board, some great folks on here. |

300Winmag: "Have both canister stoves and white gas stoves, even an old SVEA 123. Are Colin Fletcher’s initials scratched on the bottom of that last one? ;-) (Mine is still working fine at age 50.) If I didn’t already have a BWCAW bowhunt in the works for early October, you and I would be arguing over who would be sitting in the stern of my Penobscot 17. Let me know if you need any logistical support for this endeavor. I live in Duluth and would be happy to help as I’m able. P.s. Permit applications open online at 0900 CST on January 30th. NOBODY knows how the shutdown might affect that, so don’t miss a chance if you have identified an itinerary by then. You might be surprised at how many trips are taken in September these days. EDIT: While I was drafting this, a notice was posted in another thread that the permit process is proceeding: https://www.recreation.gov/permits/233396 P.s. .30-06, not .300 Win Mag. ;-) P.p.s. Actually, I like my .35 Rem even better than my ought-six. :-) 2019 BWCAW permit process |

I'm looking at mid to late September for a trip. Should be a bit easier to get permits for that time. I realize I may be several months late in applying for a permit. Trip duration is partially dependent on the other guy, but I want a minimum of 7 days and hopefully 2 weeks. I'm flying in from Nevada so want to make the most of it. As for a canoe, I feel that 17' is my lower limit on length. Very likely I'll rent from Piragis Northwoods. Good folks there and I've had good experience with purchases I've made from them. I plan to bring my own paddles because I've used them in so many places that it's like bringing old friends. As for tents, I have two Tarp tents, a 2-person Scarp 2 and a solo Moment DW. Both are double wall tents and are very light, being made of silnylon. Depending on the other guy's preference, we can sleep in the 2-person tent or each have our own tents. Definitely I'll bring a 10' x 10' dining fly. Have both canister stoves and white gas stoves, even an old SVEA 123. I live to eat and not the other way around so I'll be actually cooking, not just boiling water to pour into a freeze-dry pouch. That means spaghetti dinners and omelette for breakfasts to break the monotony of instant oatmeal. It will all be backpacking-type food, either freeze dried or dehydrated. I'd prefer to have both of us eat the same meals, but that's open for discussion. I may bring some light fishing gear, but probably just a handline. BTW, I will very much want to hire a shuttle boat to get us "away from the madding crowd" quickly and perhaps back to Ely quickly. Eric B. |

I have been a Nordic Ski Patroller for 10 years in Erie, Pennsylvania (French Creek Nordic Ski Patrol) and an alpine Ski Patroller for 6 years, Las Vegas, Nevada (Lee Canyon Ski & Snowboard Resort). As for canoeing creds, I've earned the ACA's Moving Water Instructor certification and have canoed in the Kipawa Game Preserve,Quebec and the French and Magnetawan rivers in Ontario and well as grew up canoeing the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania. I also have sea kayaked in Georgian Bay, Lake Erie, and the Main coast. Right now backpacking and hunting are my main hobbies here in Nevada. Sometimes I do back country ski camping in my nearby Spring Mountains. For this trip I have all my own gear except the canoe. I can even outfit another person pretty much completely if necessary. I'd want to rent an 18 ft.canoe for ease of paddling longer distances. Eric B. |
