There are quite a few options. Below are the places I would consider.

Ely Area:
Riverpoint Resort
Fenske Lake Cabins
Big Lake Wilderness Lodge

Gunflint:
Poplar Haus
Rockwood
Tuscarora Outfitters
Clearwater Lodge

Off the Gunflint trail is Clearwater Historical Lodge for comfy northwoods experience and charm. Eastern end of BWCA. Selection of lakes nearby for fishing day trips. As far as targeting SM in July....someone else will have to advise on particular lakes.

One of my favorite parts of tripping up there. You're right, the relative lack of light does make for terrific stargazing. I typically do two trips a year - early June, then mid to late September. The September one works much better for me as it relates to the stars. I have a real hard time staying awake late enough to see stars in June!

Have you ever seen this light pollution map ? Places up the Gunflint Trail may be a tiny bit better for star gazing due to the distance from town.

Hello everyone!

I would like to come to the area the last week of July 2019. I will have a three month old and my wife isn't too keen on camping with a newborn.

I am looking for suggestions in what would be a lodging vacation. I am looking for something where I can fish and catch some smallmouth in July and for something that will be comfy for my wife and newborn. I am also curious about the light pollution. I would assume that stargazing is great.

So I guess my needs are: decent fishing if possible, stargazing, comfy accommodations for my wife, maybe swimming access for my wife and me.

Please chime in. If I can find something, I will book it asap. Thank You

That is a very busy week for the resorts so you may just need to take the 1st place you find available. We are staying at Rockwood with our newborn and older daughters the last week of July. They are full and we booked back in February.

Trail Center has 2 little cabins that we've stayed at before and had good luck fishing right from the docks in early August. Plus the best restaurant in the world is right there.

East Bearskin and Clearwater are two more on the Gunflint side that are very nice. I looked at Tuscarora's website and it looks like the only cabin available that week is their big one. Tuscarora is a cool place being on Round Lake with no other cabins on the lake besides the resort.

On the Ely side we really liked our stay at Kawishiwi Lodge but there is a good chance they are full. When we stayed there we booked in February and got the last available cabin for our August stay. We got lucky because someone had cancelled a couple of days before we called.
