yes they are farthest from the cabins, but too close together for my comfort. 4 is private.

Hello:

I've searched and read the other Fenske Lake campground threads that came up but didn't see an answer to this question.

Has anyone used site #7 before? In the "Best In Tent Camping" book the author describes a trail down a ridge to the site at the water's edge.

Sounds really nice!--just wondering if that's the reality and if the path is easy to navigate with gear.

If not, any opinions as to the best site for tent camping at Fenske in regard to a view of the lake from the campsite?

I saw a post that described a blow down in 2017 that had dramatically altered the campground--but couldn't get a sense that it was so bad as to not recommend it anymore.

In addition to Fall Lake and Birch Lake, any other preferred rustic campgrounds for tent camping in this area?--especially any with sites close to the water?

Thanks for any input!

# 7 has a fairly decent drop down a path of 60-100 yards. Probably 20ft of elevation change. Not difficult to navigate by anyone of modest mobility. Site wooded flat area that opens on to open ledge rock some ten feet above the lake. Once surrounded by thick balsam and a couple of large red and white pines. Balsam was cut in fuels reduction program, red and white pines were victims of strong storm two summers ago. It is a very fine site- usually one of the first to be reserved.


The Fenske campground is very nice. The fuels reduction has reduced the privacy but is paying dividends in health of the forest. It is very close to my house and I walk or bike through quite often.

Besides the blow down "they" came in and thinned the forest. Most of the underbrush.

A little unappealing to my eye... hope it returns to more natural soon.

Any recollection if that site has any decent hammock trees left?! :^)

No not the blowdown. The Forest Service removed most of the balsam that was the dominant understory tree. They have been working this program in sections around the Echo and the North Arm road for the last couple of years.


The recent "blowdown" (not to be confused with the big July 4 blowdown) affected mainly the large red and white pines along the shore and ridgeline above Fenske.
