Knife Lake on the Gunflint side, but that's the better part of a day to get to, especially for a shorter trip. Red Rock or Alpine are also nice if you put in at Seagull.

I would recommend entry point #14 and head to Lynx. Good campsites and good fishing for walleye, smallies and pike. You can also do a day trip to Heritage or Hustler when your on Lynx. Good luck.

Thanks everyone, a few good recommendations here. I'll tell you one thing, it is a hard choice to make looking through all the entry points, lakes, and recommendations!

Thanks for the replies so far! I am kinda looking for something on the Ely side preferably to save on some driving time. Appreciate the input so far.

I agree, #14 Little Indian Sioux would be very good.
I just checked permits for #14 openings from July 24th to August 7th. More still open for the end of July and starting Aug 3rd, the permits are going fast.
The same is probably true for a number of entries, especially ones that are more desirable.

You did the Ely side so now I would say go to the Gunflint side. Maybe Bearskin to Pine or get to Horseshoe lake where you might see a moose.

Good morning all, really enjoy reading all of your stories, information, and recommendations!
I'll be taking my three kids, boys 18 & 24, girl 16, to the BWCA the end of July or beginning of August. It will probably be a three night trip with us doing a base camp once we're in. Two of them and I went out of Mudro and stayed at Foretown lake a couple years ago. I am looking for recommendations on another great area that we could get to and basecamp at. Also they love to fish.
Thank you in advance everyone, appreciate your info!

Homer Lake is not an Ely entry, but it is not East side either. Off the Sawbill Trail it is a fairly quiet area with easy entry, lots of camping and daytrip/exploration options. Oh, and pretty good fishing.

Late July should show a few more permits open than early August. Do you have a date to start "on the water" yet?
If a permit is open, you may want to consider using #16 Moose River, travel to Agnes Lake and day tripping from there. Or #14 Little Indian Sioux, go over to Lynx Lake. If you don't mind one long portage at the beginning (way shorter easier during the trip), consider #4 Crab Lake. Less people, great pike & bass fishing and lots of directions for the day trips.

How about E. Bearskin Lake with a side trip to Johnson Falls?

Rose lake, great fishing, nice day hike trail as well. Couple of ways to get to it so options are open. We came in from gunflint, camped 1 night on south lake, then the remaining 3 days on rose. We had two 10 year olds.

Check out Insula. Making it to the north half where the fire did not effect the campsites is definitely possible in a day. One of my family's favorites for both lounging and fishing.
