Start and end at Sawbill, either start with lady chain over to Polly then up to Malberg and up Louse River, back down to Sawbill. Or go the opposite way around the loop, which would put your food pack a bit heavier for the long portage on Day 1.

Sea Gull to Paulsen to Peter to Ogishkemuncie back to Sea Gull (or some variation thereof).

Sea Gull to Paulsen is one of the toughest maintained portages in the bwca.

I am constantly planning challenging 4 day trips... if only I had the time to take them and friends to go with! My shorthand works like this Entry-Camp 1-Camp 2/Camp 2 Alternate-Camp 3-Exit. You would need an additional PMA permit to stay on Sunday Lake or Raven Lake. The top 4 on my list are:

Angleworm EP20-Sunday Lake-Crooked-Horse-Angleworm exit(via Trease) Really challenging portages, Sundial Lake PMA, Curtain Falls, can't miss it), Pictographs on Crooked, maybe Basswood Falls if you have time.

Kawishiwi EP37-Malberg-Raven-Fishdance/River-Kawishiwi exit. Beaver Dams on Kawishiwi River, Pagami Creek Fire, Mugwump Lake PMA, Pictographs on Fishdance, high probability of Moose sightings.

Ham (Cross Bay EP50)-Long Island/Frost-Bologna/Afton/Mora-Tuscarora-Round exit. The legendary Frost River and you get just a glimpse of the Cavity Lake and Ham Lake Fires.

LIS North EP14-Fat/Eugene via Slim-Fat portage-LLC-Oyster-LIS exit. Rugged area, Pictographs on LLC if you make it there, tons of trout to be had. Lots of options here to explore, I'd actually rather spend a week in this area myself and check out the Sioux-Hustler Trail, Takucmich AND Gebe as well as a few of the little creeks (Hustler River, Pocket/Gebe Creek). If I had two vehicles I would park one at Stuart EP19 or Moose EP16 and exit accordingly.

The beginning and end are somewhat busy areas but we had a great time on a trip where we entered Lake 1, went east to Insula before looping back through Thomas and Disappointment and leaving at Snowbank.

I did this loop in 2016 and found it to be great scenery and very challenging.
Temperance River Loop:
23 miles, 12 lakes, 1 river, 3 creeks, 14 portages.
Challenging terrain.
Will cross the Laurentian Divide twice, this is the north-south continental divide. The water north of the divide flows to the Arctic Ocean, the water south of the divide flows to the Atlantic Ocean.
Day 1: Sawbill to Ada Creek, Ada Lake, Skoop Creek, Skoop Lake, Cherokee Lake.
Day 2: Cherokee Lake to Sitka Lake, North Temperance Lake, South Temperance Lake, Temperance River, Weird Lake, Jack Lake.
Day 3: Jack Lake to Kelly Lake, Burnt Lake, Smoke Lake, ending at Sawbill Lake.

Hello,

My friends and I are experienced BWCA canoers and are looking for a challenging 4-day route. Preferably a loop of some sort. Any help appreciated. Shooting for late August.
