Jackfish Bay all the way since you don't mind the portage. It's very flat and smooth. Plenty of sites past the no motor line on Basswood and good fishing if you're into that. There's even a site or two off the long portage right along the river. But I'd say night one camp somewhere above the falls near the border. Do the portage morning of day 2 and head down your route.

We did that exact route to start my wife's first trip 7 years ago or so. We spent night 2 on Wed bay after a nice travel day from above the Upper Falls. Night 3 was on Friday Bay

Quick question.
Trip dates of 7/26 to 8/1
Entry point #23 Mudro.
Headed for Crooked but want to catch as many waterfalls as possible.

What do you think the chances of getting a campsite near Upper Basswood Falls area on Jackfish Bay/Basswood Lake? (Long portage doesn't bother us)

The alternate route would be through Horse and Horse River and skip the upper falls but see Wheelbarrow and LBF.

Chances for a sight on Horse Lake the first night? Not sure I want to risk finding a site near LBF. I want time to enjoy the falls.

Once that side of the route is decided it will be Basswood River to Wednesday Bay

Wednesday Bay to Friday or Saturday bay for two days
Day trip to Curtain and rebecca Falls

Head south to Gun for a night

Gun to Fairy or Boot or Fourtown for a night

Exit at Mudro.

I paddle up and down the Horse (more up than down) with some frequency. I've been surprised at how often sites above Lower Basswood Falls are open when the sites below the falls (and for the next 3 miles) are taken.

Don't have information on the sites around the upper falls.
