I believe my wife and I stayed at Fenske Lake campground which was amazing last year. But Mike has a good point, not all state parks/campgrounds will be plowed (will any be plowed out?)

Hi all. I'd like to head up and explore the Ely/Isabella area sometime in the next couple weeks. I'm wondering if anyone knows a campground or free spot where I can sleep in my SUV overnight. Maybe Bear Head Lake SP? Thanks

Not much is plowed, and if the FS back roads are plowed, it's probably because they are logging in that area and you dont want to drive or worse yet park with the logging trucks around. Even some bigger stuff up off the Gunflint doesn't get plowed well.....or at all. Go to the Tuscarora Lodge web site and check out their blog and their video on "winter parking"

A little farther north you can make it up near Pine Lake. I believe that is plowed all the way because of the house up there. Others might know more.

I figured access to most anywhere up there would be difficult. Thanks for the replies.

Fall Lake campgrounds main lot was plowed when I was there last month, but none of the roads around the camping areas were plowed. You could camp in the main lot I suppose.

I can't think of any in the Isabella area that will be plowed.
