Margo	07/28/2020 05:43PM   Hello! I am embarking on an 8-day trip starting/ending at Seagull lake with 2 other friends. We will be using a Whisperlite Shaker Jet stove, and I'm trying to calculate about how much fuel we will need. We will be doing half dehydrated meals, half cooking meals for 5-10 mins (pasta, etc...). Has anyone done a similar trip with a whisperlite and have any suggestions? Thank you!
marsonite	07/28/2020 06:27PM   Always a shot in the dark for me. I would say take three 20 oz bottles. Depends a lot on how much you cook though. If you make a simple cozy (my current one is made out of duct tape and scraps of a closed cell sleeping pad, and I have also made them from bubble foil), you can cook a lot of things by just bringing it too a boil, boiling for one minute, and pop it in the cozy for however long you normally cook it. Works great for pasta, minute rice, hot cereal, rehydrating dry foods, etc. Saves a lot of fuel.
Jackfish	07/29/2020 09:28AM   Been cooking with Whisperlites for years. Two 22 ounce MSR fuel bottles should be plenty. There are only three of you and you’ll be doing a lot of simply boiling water. If you start cooking fish, you “might” be pushing it with two bottles. It wouldn’t add much weight to have a third bottle, though. You don’t want to run out. You could also make the third bottle an 11 ounce.

(Prior to edit, I had this inverted) MH meals take from 1.5 to 2 cups of water (say 0.5 L) A cup of coffee is 0.25 Liters C - number of cups of coffee M - number of MH meals Total fuel= (M*0.5 + C*0.25) / 1.3 For eight days using two MH packets per meal and two meals per day -> M=32 Eight mornings of coffee -> C=3*0.25*8 = 6 Total fuel = (32/2 + 6/4)/1.3 = 13.5 oz of fuel I would take two 22oz bottles. Actually, I fly to MSP and drive to Ely. As such, I have to buy my fuel after landing. I buy a gallon at Walmart. At the end of the trip, I give it away to someone. ------ I made a cozy out of Reflectix (bought a roll of it and still have not run out).

I usually take two 22 oz bottles and have not come close to using it all. We are usually groups of two or three but have done groups up to six. We cook at least one meal a day on the stove and sometime use a fire, but not often. I also take a lightweight wood burning stove as a backup. It only weighs a couple ounces, a lot lighter then taking another bottle of fuel.
