Karl: "Obviously still a beautiful area, scenic lakes, well maintained portages so can't complain about that! But feeling the impact of what seems like a lot of new visitors with folks being loud and sounds echoing across the water, some garbage left at sites, & live trees cut down. " We had the nice 5 star on the SE corner of shell. There were folks just north of us on the peninsula to the little shell portage. First night they were really living it up including howling at the moon. Some cut trees at our site. Day tripped to lynx to fish and saw a place where folks cut down several pines and built a shelter like you would see on a survival show. Never seen anything like that. |

Karl: "Saw that shelter too! Couldn’t believe it, basically a small log cabin up on shore. " During the lightning Sunday, we actually took shelter in it to wait for break in the weather to head back to camp. I called the Forest Service and they were already aware and expressed thanks for calling it in |

CoachBigD: "CStoke: "... lake I'd say to avoid is Ramshead. " I've got into it on two different trips. Its a shallow lake. I have only fished from shore so I won't speak to the fishing aspects, but in terms of views and swimming I'd stick to Nina Moose or Agnes. BUT anywhere in the BWCA is a blessed place to be. Perhaps the plus to Ramshead is that it's off the main highway from Nina Moose to Agnes. |

Might encounter a boat or two on Loon if you go that way. Devil's Cascade is a cool spot on the portage between Pauness and Loon. There's more info on the unmarked portage between Slim and Fat. Fishing on Lynx and Shell. Chairs on Gebe if you make it that far NE. 6 nights is plenty to make it about anywhere in that area south of LLC. You're sure it's LIS north and not LIS south? |

Thanks for any information. |

LIS was fabulous! Wish we were on it more than just a morning. You have 2-3 loop options, plus if you go to Lac La Croix you have even more possibilities. |

Another option would be to do the Oyster, Gebe, Beartrack, Loon loop. You'll get farther away from crowds, and there are some cool things to see (pictograph on Rocky, Devils Cascade portage). Upper and Lower Pauness don't have the best sites or fishing. |

Im getting kind of nervous about my trip this weekend. Headed to Lake One and looping through to Snowbank on a weeklong trip. Hoping its not too crazy and might have to get creative in the middle of it to find solitude... |

CStoke: "... lake I'd say to avoid is Ramshead. " Curious as to why. I have wondered about going there based off the last fishery survey (29 years ago) showing lots of pike. |

I would recommend one night on shell/lynx, 2 nights on Hustler (solitude), 2 nights on boulder / tiger bay, one night Nina Moose on the way out. Obviously the larger loop through fat, slim, finger, gebe is great as well if you want to cover a little more mileage. I have done both and loved them each for different reasons. You really cannot go wrong with this area it is my favorite. |

Nice to meet you on the portage, Coach. We stayed at Lynx day 1-3, then Shell day 4 at the SW site near the portage to Pauness. The howling didn’t seem to stop at that point either. Hope this new norm of loud visitors & destroying trees doesn’t continue, be a real shame to say the least |
