Some years ago I did a day trip into Hegman the first week of November. The Hegman Lakes were open but Trease Lake was ice covered. That time of year, one cold night could ice over many areas especially close to shore. Hiking into Big Moose might be a good option. I’d also consider Kiwishiwi River as another possible option. There are several campsites close to the entry point. Also consider Isabella Lake or Island River as another option.

thanks for the tips, will look into those! Unfortunately not looking promising with temps dropping to the teens the next couple of weeks and highs just barely above freezing.
Backpacking trip may be the way we go!

I would recommend the hike-in entry point into Big Moose. There are two camp sites where the trail comes to the lake, one in the north bay and the other out on the point. It's a fairly long hike in, but it's a big lake and the point may be ice free.

around 14.5 hours of sun below the horizon- sunset around 4:30pm= lots and lots of wood if I was going. If possible, I would use a hot tent or rent one.

Alright, timing changed so starting a new post since conditions in November are already very different than October.
Roughly five days, looking to base camp to avoid potentially risky portages with ice.
Putting in near Ely, looking for advice on EP with larger lakes that likely won’t be icy (except for skim ice near shore, expecting that).
Dates will be somewhere around November 6 entry maybe a week later.
Thinking Farm, Hegman, or maybe some moving water?

Hmmmm. I am thinking bring your ice skates. Depends on the weather of course but the middle of November is awfully late.

Ha! Yeah definitely pushing the edge of possible. We’re staying flexible and will keep a hike-in camping trip in our back pocket if temps dip by then and prevent it
