Yes, 2 permits would be the way to go. You can all camp on the same site as long as the total number on the 2 permits is 9 or fewer.

Thanks but I didn't explain very well. If I tag onto the front end, I will be meeting the group at the entry point to help the group travel. Technically that will mean I have exited and would need a second permit if I'm interpreting the regs correctly.

Sorry, yes, my plan works if you stay longer. Simpler might be get your own permit and rest of group that joins have their own. You can trip and camp together. Your way works too - end your first trip to and start a second with group. For a specific everyone must enter on same day as indicated on the permit.

To have a group meet you, you need a good plan on how to meet. That can be to meet at a specific point so you can then lead them to the campsite or a list of campsites to try and a way to make the campsite obvious. We tried the latter and our friends forgot their Tibetan prayer flags. But we still found them.
Note that if you do meet them at the EP and do the second trip on that permit, make sure one of them is listed as leader or alternate so they can pick up the permit without you.
BTW, the trip I mentioned above, we had been in for a week at that point. We met them on their second day. What was really nice was all the fresh food they brought with them. Second week in the BW with home baked bread and fresh veggies from their garden was pretty awesome.

That may be true and I have no doubt a ranger may have said that but I do have in writing from rangers that the only "legal" exit and re-entry is on same permit is a corridor crossing, namely Echo and Gunflint trails.
Its unfortunate that much of this is recorded in hard copy records in Duluth and not on line (lack of funds) along with rangers interpreting the regulations differently. Its no wonder we have different views.

Doing a group trip and thinking of tacking a solo trip on the front or back end of the group trip. To be legal, I need to exit with my group and re-enter under my own permit, correct? And I can't leave my camping gear at a campsite while I do the exit/re-entry, correct? Anything else I need to be aware of to stay legal? Thanks.
