I’ve done a couple solo trips in the past but it’s been awhile. Do I still need to watch a video before I enter? I’m not sure how that would work for day trips? I’m assuming I don’t. Also does anyone have any advice on a route with maybe a couple small to medium portages from hungry jack into the boundary waters. I know we will probably have to portage to bearskin but we actually want to get into the boundary waters. Our kids are 5 and 7 so want to avoid long portages if possible.

"Need to?" No. There isn't any issuing station involved upon entry for a day trip. Nobody really even knows you're there until after the copy of the paper you dropped off in the box is picked up. Unless, of course, they encounter you along your route.
But, the videos really aren't that torturous. They're worth the time spent for anyone planning a visit. Or just interested in proper behavior.

Is there a quota for day trips during the quota season in the Boundary Waters? I read the regulations and understand you have to have a permit that’s subject to the entry point quotas from May to September but I’m wondering if I can issue my family a day trip permit at any of the entry points day of? I know you can do this during the off season but I’m confused about the quota season.
We will be RV camping on Hungry Jack this summer and want to paddle into the Boundary Waters at least one day to fish and have a picnic. Thanks.

Day use permits are not subject to the quota. Day use permits are self-issue at the entry point (if there are any in the box). They are only for the day of issue and have no overnight (campsite) rights associated with them. Your plan to paddle in, fish, and picnic (then paddle out?) are what day use permits are for. Just to be sure, you might stop and pickup a couple at a Forest Service Station on your way up the Gunflint.

Yup, you’re good to go. No quota for a day trip. Max group size is nine and four canoes. Grab a permit at the entry point at the box. Fill it out and keep it with you. Have a good time. Leave no trace. Clean up your campsite when you leave.
Leave no trace mean no trace whatsoever even if the people before you didn’t do that.
