Chizzy	05/10/2022 07:41PM   Hello, New to the BWCA and new to the idea of bring my fishing boat into BWCA. i was told there was some portages that had rollers that i could use to transport your boat on to the next lake. anyone know what ones there on and how to use them. i have a 16 foot aluminum boat 15hp and its pretty heavy and has anyone used portage wheels with heavy boats. THANKS
cyclones30	05/10/2022 08:14PM   Do you have a motor permit first? Getting one of those is top priority because w/out a permit you're not taking the boat or using portages. There's a limited number of boats per day per motor area (kind of like canoe groups entering at entry points)
Tony	05/10/2022 09:14PM   There were mechanical portages also at prairie portage on the US side going from sucker lake into basswood and it was also a mechanical portage on the loon River and also loon lake going into lack LaCroix it's been a long time since I've seen either one of them and I'm not sure if they're still in operation this is the mechanical toll going in to basswood lake Tony
yogi59weedr	05/10/2022 09:06PM   Only one I know of is between Triangle and Ojibway. Not in the BWCA. I would think it would be illegal because of the mechanical factor.
Tony	05/10/2022 09:09PM   Mechanical assistance is only permitted over the following: International Boundary, Four-Mile Portage, Fall-Newton-Pipestone and Back Bay Portages into Basswood Lake, Prairie Portage, Vermilion-Trout Lake Portage. This is cut and pasted right from the forest service planning guide. The roller assistance mechanisms that I've seen on Fall lake was a do-it-yourself projects that attached to the board and the users pulled the boat across the portages at fall lake and Pipestone Bay. The individuals took their wheels with them and didn't leave them at the portage hope this helps Tony

tumblehome	05/11/2022 07:12AM   The mechanical portage from Loon to Lac LaCroix is manned by an operator and there is a fee. Otherwise it’s a manual carry. Tom
