Wine lake would be another option. Once you cross that long portage the forest changes from "dark pine" type on the south to beautiful displays of colors once you reach Zenith. Wine has lakers and there are still plenty of moose in the area.

There are a lot of Trout Lakes accessible by EPs off the Gunflint Trail. And if you are lucky enough to see any moose, it seems that the largest populations left are in that area too. Just be aware that Lake Trout season ends on Sept 30th.

Hello,

Some friends and I will be visiting the BWCA on September 28 for 3 nights. Does anyone have a route they recommend for a potential moose sighting and incredible fall foliage?

We will also be looking to catch lake trout, walleyes and smallmouth.

If you have any suggestions as to where we may be able to spot a moose, enjoy fall foliage and experience great fishing, we would really appreciate it.

Thank you!

A lot of golden tamarack and aspen in the Horseshoe Lake area last fall when I was there. I saw a moose on Muskeg Creek and some hunters had shot one on Pillsbery.

papoose creek has beautiful tamaracks and stands of aspen, a gorgeous route during the fall. also this is a good area for spotting moose, try to be on the water by dawn, you can sometimes attract moose by pouring water out of a nalgene, the moose think it may be another moose urinating and will come and inspect. above all be quite and alert. i don't think there are lake trout in this area however.

try the border lakes through South lake, Rose, Rove, Mountain, and Moose Lake. Fabulous scenery, tall hills, Lakers ....I was there last September ..the fall colors were great.
