Haven't been on Snake before. We're bringing my 8 & 9 year old nephews for their first big trip. I've read some comments that as long as the water is not low, people are skipping the 2nd and 3rd portages- do you have any input about that? It would be amazing to skip them, but not if it means anything rapid-y with the kids with.

I love the mighty Snake River. I can't comment on current conditions, but if you are heading in next week I have complete confidence you will make it to Bald Eagle, come hell or high water. Have you been that way before? That is a fun way in.

Has anyone been up Snake River recently? We are heading in next week at EP 84 and planning to stay on Bald Eagle. How was was the river, portages, fishing, and any recommendation on campsite on Bald Eagle?

Sorry, not been on Snake River - almost because of last minute availability this year - but some on campsites. I liked site 1726 on BE - directly north of Snake River - basically last site on north east shore before Isabella River. Also liked sites on Isabella River. There is an USFS official site at east end of first portage on Isabella that is not marked as one on maps here, other sites, or according to a note here, on MacKenzie. Lunched there - seemed nice. Also next site at bend before Quadaga Lake was quite nice - wolves and moose. Another tripped lunched at 1730, just east of portage to Gull - and it was interesting and huge, if shady. Could have fit a whole Scout troop there (and ours is over 100 scouts). Lastly, the island sites on Gull are nice.
