Project update:
Photo #1 shows the hull glassed. I used West Systems epoxy and the cloth that came with the kit. The cloth had an extremely fine weave (like nylon stockings) and difficult to handle. The weave filled with one additional coat of resin.
I found that working on the model was more difficult that working on the 18' we built at North House.
Photo #2 shows the canoe off the molds !!!!! Yeah, finally getting to look like the real thing.

the real challenge now is to clean up the glue on the inside. I used too much glue on the planks and I can't use brute force to scrape it down....... The planks are only 1/16" thick. By the time I faired the outside there was not much wood left to work with.
Thankfully there are no holes yet, but I sure can see a lot of light through the hull :)

I did the same thing, but mine was about a 1/3rd scale of the Puddle Duck plans from whatever that popular book is.

At the small 1":16' scale........ it is tough on my eyes. Can't hardly see a 1/32 division on my steel rule never mind shaping a part to a 1/32nd tolerance. But 1/32" at the model scale translates to 6" full scale....... hmmmm, best get another set of glasses
Working on my model tonight and not pleased with my mold stations.

A project up-date.
I laid my last plank and I have a fairly fair hull
Next step fiber glass and West Systems epoxy
then, hopefully, getting it off the molds
:)

My first dream in the 60's was a wood-canvas..... years went by, no canoe. Second, it was a cedar strip..... years went by, no canoe. Then this past Christmas, my wife wrapped me up a Bear Mountain Chestnut Prospector 16' Fort 1:16 scale model from Bear Mountain.
Building the model requires following the same steps (baby steps) as building a full sized canoe..... from shaping the strong back to glassing it with West Systems! Wow, I thought, what a way to get on-hands experience........ and I have learned.
The stage is now also set for doing a full size. I bought a kit of clear strips from Woodcanoe, and I believe that I have fallen for the NW Merlin. I downloaded the free plans from NW..... hmmmmm, rather cryptic until I studied them. The bible is on order from Bear Mountain. Will keep ya posted when I start that one.
For now, baby steps. I am off and running with strong back finished and forms in place.
