I posted this question on the general thread and didn't get a response so I decided to try it here. I refinished my 2 Souris canoes and was wondering about putting some varnish on them. They are always shedded when not being used, [2-3 trips a year, for a week each time]. Should I use Spar varnish or polyurethane? Do I need to lightly sand them before I slap the varnish on, or do I need varnish at all? 150 grit sandpaper or finer? Thanks a lot. FRED

I'd say they should be varnished but they'd probably be ok considering the usage you're giving them.
I'd thoroughly sand with 220 before varnishing. Spar varnish is the cheapest, easiest to find and should be quite effective.

Thanks much Alan for your response, I think I'll varnish the 17 footer as that one gets a lot more usage than the 18.6, sand lightly with 220 grit and Spar varnish it shall be. FRED
