I enjoyed the videos, and I think most everyone here in the forums will enjoy them because we are all fans of Quetico.

If you are serious about constructive criticism, the videos could be much more interesting if cut a lot of footage and use shorter clips, focus on the really interesting parts, and don't be afraid to arrange them differently than chronological order so that they can tell a story. e.g. packing/travel clips, lake/portage clips, highlights (fishing/fire/cooking), packing/travel clips, done... and keep them a couple of seconds long. Another approach could be if you record a long scene and want to put it in the video, and say you are talking about fishing... you will want to add in some coverage clips every few seconds, say if you are talking about the lake, keep the audio going but show a clip of the lake during sun rise or sun set, then go back to the clip where you are talking, then when you mention what tackle you are using you jump to a clip where you are tying the bait to the line, or setting up your tackle box at camp.

too long; didn't read, use shorter clips, if using a longer clip then try to mix in some b-roll footage to break it up.

For your friends and family, long videos might be nice if you want to get together and watch them while you tell them about your vacation, but I don't people will stick around 15 minutes and sit through clips that last a couple of minutes of you rowing a canoe.

a 2-5 min video can have much more impact than a 10 minute one.

cool, another trick you can do is cut the clips so that they sync up to a song you like, slower when the song is slow, faster when it goes faster, even if you don't end up using that song.. it gives the edit a nice rythm, film scores work nice for this

I was serious, and that is great info for me to use. I think I will try to make one "highlight" video of the trip. I will utilize your suggestions, and see what I can come up with.

I think editing this down to a manageable length will be good. Maybe throw in some slides as well? I like how the audio came in well. Too many times that is a problem. Great job! I'm going in for my first solo in September for 10 nights and can't wait. Not going to get videos but plenty of stills...

Nice videos! I sure enjoyed watching them. Looks like you had a good trip and caught some nice fish!

I think the editing was well done. Maybe throw in a bit of music during the paddling? A few traveling montages would be sweet :)

I do not have a depth finder. The rod I used was a 6'6" med lite. I carried a 6 ft med as my spare but never pulled it out. Both were spooled with Trilene XL 8lb test. Trip report is delayed by work and new puppy, but will be coming!

I have been working on a full trip report, but it is taking some time. I have, however, gotten a few days of video edited, and will be adding more as they are completed. These are mostly fishing action, if you are interested.

Constructive criticism is welcome on the content or editing, as I am in the process of editing more video. This was my first trip shooting video, and editing it for others to see. The whole point of taking the GoPro was so that I could get fish pictures since I was solo, but I played around shooting some portages, campsites, and other stuff like time lapse.
I'm not sure if I will bother next trip or not, all the gear and batteries added about 4 lbs extra. Not a big deal in a group, but significant when solo.

8 days, solo. My 1st and second day, I didn't hassle with video. Had a lot of traveling and just took some pictures. I base camped on McDougall, and started shooting videos then.

Bump for added video.

Before my trip I had numerous conversations with folks, as well as reading in Tim Meads book "Quetico Adventures" about the portage between McDougall and Keats. While out fishing on the 20th, I walked the portage, and I decided that I didn't want to try to carry a canoe on that trail. The next morning, some force drew me to the portage landing, and I took the canoe across.

McDougall to Keats portage

I sped up the video 3x through most of the walk, the only "tough" section was the drop down to Keats. Very steep! There were several trees down, one was a "sit on and swing the legs over", the rest were walk around or step over. A few muddy spots, but the view from the top is awesome! I did it so I can say that I did, but I would do it again. Maybe not if it was raining and slick.

Bump for new video

Quetico 2017 June 23rd

My last full day in Quetico. The day was a mixed bag for weather, starting with low clouds and a drizzle. I had some fast action fishing on Bud Lake, but the wind kicked up. Later, several storms rolled through with heavy rain and high winds. The front moved through by 1:00, but the high winds remained, making travel on Pickerel Lake a bit challenging.

Ahh. I have a 6'6" medium lite but have never brought it up there. I use a 7' med. heavy and 7' medium. I bet those smallies are fun on that rod. I'm afraid I'll run into a trophy and lose it. Looking forward to the write up. 1 month and I'll be on McDougal. Any tips would be appreciated. I'll be solo too. my email is tom nmia @comcast . net

Enjoyed this last video. I'm coming out of my solo trip the same way. I'm really hoping I have better conditions. I have some questions - do you use a depth finder? What strength rods do you use? The one in this video looks like a medium lite. Are you still writing a report?

Great Thread. Thanks for sharing a great trip. Loved the jumping Pike Shot.

I also appreciate the editing tips. After 15 trips to the Q this will be my first one with Video.

Great Trip Great Advice. Thanks
