Just finished a trip through there in June going north to south(upstream) and it felt safer that way to me. The common advice is that it is safer going downstream. Honestly, if you pay attention, are reasonably experienced, take your time, and launch as far as possible from the falls headed the right direction they would be a piece of cake either way. It's just much easier to see exactly where they are going upstream.

That's kind of how I looked at it. Betcha this area looked awesome with the high water levels this year!

It has been 30 years since I did the Falls chain so I don't remember much about it. Which direction is safer or easier? Thinking about doing this area next Spring.

Water levels have a lot to do with safety in the falls chain. Either way the current can be an issue and portages tend to start and stop according to water levels, but you have enough experience it should be no primary issue unless the water is really high. You will get specific information when you check in with the ranger station if that is a factor.
Going north with the current is always easier, but really not a primary factor. A nice area, do not rush through.

Isn't there only one direction along the Falls Chain?
