Does anybody know if I can take a trap and catch crayfish to eat? We plan on base camping a bit and would an opportunity to put out a trap.

I was informed by an outfitter that you are allowed to catch them and eat them in the Quetico. I'll still find the reg that covers it.

I'll do that. I'm not going to use them to fish but you are right, this issue may be covered in there as well.

We ate buckets of them on one of our first trips in the 1970s while chaperoning a youth group. Poorly stocked provisions from our outfitter. Hungry teenaged boys. These critters saved the day. Boil them a bit and they turn red just like lobsters. Tasty with butter, too.
Pretty sure it was Iron Lake.

I don't know the answer to this, but it appears there is an invasive crayfish, the rusty crayfish, around Basswood Lake area. I think the invasive smallies maybe like to eat them... Probably someone brought them in for bait or in a boat at some point... Rusty crayfish

I would imagine that is how they got there and is the main reason Canada doesn't want live bait brought in.
One thing I'll have to find out is if we can catch bait once there. My original question was to eat crayfish but I'd also like to know if they (and worms, minnows) can be caught for bait.
I'll find out for sure.

That's what I figured and thought I had already read. I'll still read the regs but I appreciate the verification.

a little off topic, but quite a few years ago we were trout fishing at yellow river forest and proceeded to collect crawdads and had a great feed. they were yummy. we were not aware of any regulations regarding harvesting them. they were abundant.
trout and crawdads, made for a great meal.
