You won't have any problem finding walleye or smallies in Burntside. If Jean gets breezy, I would head for Little Jean. Some great fishing there as well for both species, plus bonus largemouth. In all it's a great area and you should do well on the fish.

Thanks everyone--your information provided is very valuable.
I am now debating about whether to leave later towards Memorial Day in order to fish for smallmouth hopefully the water on Quetico, Jean and Burntside will have warmed up a bit. Don't want to arrive too early in the spring and perhaps miss out on some good topwater smallmouth opportunities. Any thoughts?

A good place to try for smallies would be the shallow channel on Burntside that connects the west bay to the main lake. I saw what appeared to be cleared out nests in about 10 - 15 ft. of water there in early Sept. of 2018. It's a hard bottom. Also the channel that leads to Rouge Lake is worth fishing for smallies.

Thanks Mastertangler! Which side of the lake are you referring to with the islands in the “rear”. Planning to drop down into burntside for a fishing day trip from Jean. If you only had a day on Burntside which area would you focus on for fishing? Primarily targeting Walleye and SMB

Concur if SMB is a priority for you. LT and eyes shouldn't be a problem for you in those lakes either time.

Hello all
A group of 4-5 are planning a trip from the BH entry point heading east into Quetico, Jean and Burntside lakes. We will likely depart BH in mid May and plan to return to same by the end of the month.
I would like some thoughts on suggested base camps and strategizing on fishing these three lakes. For example would it be best to use Burntside as a base and fish Jean and Conk. Or use Jean as a base and fish Burntside and Quetico lakes.
Also it looks like most of the portages are straightforward. Any concerns relative to the portages?

Water out of Jean Lake no longer runs down Jean Creek. There is a log shoot just west of the portage from Jean to Conk. There are some shallow spots I got out and walked my canoe through but much easier than doing the portage. The canal can be seen on Bing Maps aerial view.

I am a fan of Burntside, very attractive place. I would probably plan to base camp there mostly to stay off the big water due to fickle may weather. Jean can get angry rather quickly.
There is a very nice site on a rocky peninsula in a channel of sorts between the islands more toward the rear of the lake. Hooked a massive pike along that peninsula which towed my little solo before breaking off. Walleye can be had around the Little Rock outcropping not far from camp.
Spend your last couple of days on Cirrus which puts you in a good position to exit.
