Are there any issues with dangerous currents in June going down the Maligne out of Sturgeon? I see a lot of rapids without portages. I'll speak to the park rangers as my trip nears but just wondering if anyone has had problems.

Going down it is good.
Of course it depends on the water level and the rain.
That said, I have been down it in a solo canoe during high water and was not bothered by it too much. It is a mostly wide, deep, and swift river but not so much that it is dangerous. I would call it dangerous if going up it in high water. It deserves respect like any river.
It is a very historical waterway. Tom

Use cation. I know of several drownings on that river.

I have been down the Maligne river when it has been really rolling. I think the current will be very strong with all the rain and snow we have had. That said you should be ok if your are cautious and don’t cut the portages short.

Been down/up Maligne a couple of times in June. Going down from Sturgeon, you must take the first three portages on the northern shoreline...after that, the rest of the rapids into Tanner Lake are easy enough to run.....

Have done it a couple times in mid June with no problem; once solo and once with my wife tandem. Would not take her somewhere I was concerned about as it would just stress her out.
