tmccann: "That is a root cellar. Likely the Kings Point Rangers grew potatoes and over wintered them in the cellar. I took a close look at it in 2009 and it was in good shape, glad to see it’s still there." Thats what I thought, also maybe ice house.

On King Point, behind one of the old Ranger Station buildings, there is this little Dog House-type structure. Seems too small for much cool storage. Possibly short-term fresh game storage? Just a clever structure the old Ranger built?

I did not shine a light in there, but I should have.

I was thinking of a root celler, but it looked pretty small. I suppose it has to be small else it would get too warm. Thanks for that!

Hemm, yeah, it probably is a root cellar, but kinda an annoying root celler with the small door. Maybe the potato/turnip/carrot/onion/garlic crop wasn't that big, but bending over and reaching in trying to find a potato doesn't look too easy. Size was probably dictated by the ease of digging in the bedrock.
