I'm assuming you meant you had extended RABCs?

Did the rangers mention any issue with going into Sunday lake?
Where did you end up on kawnipi and what were you catching?

Thanks for the info. I edited my original post and fixed the typos. I will remember than for next time or perhaps get radical and proof read the submission before I post it. Of course if I had used that double check philosophy in Quetico we wouldn't have ended up off trail in a swamp!

We are just back from a 10-day trip to Kawnipi. We entered PP with our extended RABCs and intended to go up Agnes lake. The park official told us the Meadows portage was closed due to the fire still not being out. Our only other option was to go up the S-Chain.

It was interesting to see a new route. The travel was more typical of Quetico with short paddles and very frequent portages. The portages were not long, but many were rocky with difficult take-outs and put-ins so we felt like we were making no progress relative to the long paddle up the Agnes route.

Going into Silent Lake, the trails comes out on a rock shelf and we failed to see the cairn to pick up the trail. We ended up following a moose trail into a swamp. After battling the swamp and going thigh deep in multiple places, we reached the end only to find no trail and had to backtrack. We then saw the cairns leading to the rest of the portage. A long and difficult diversion to what was already a long day of paddling and portaging.

With that aside we had a great trip with good fishing on Kawnipi. We had a moose swim across the lake to our camp on the island on Kawnipi. He swam up to around a 100 yards and then calmly turned around and swam back. We only saw one solo paddlers on our entire trip up to and in Kawnipi so we saw equal number of moose and humans. The park official said that only 5-6 people a day are gong through PP this year.

So if you are going through the S-Chain, don't make our mistake and mind the cairns.

As I understood it the fire was between Sunday and Meadows. The ranger said that the danger was while the fire was not currently close to the portage trail we could portage our canoe and half of our gear over and then have the wind come up and the fire block the trail. That would leave us stranded and with no canoe to go anywhere. With the rain they had before we went in and while we were there I have to believe the fire is out but the official word was the portage into Meadows was still closed.

We camped on McGiver bay (not sure of the spelling) in Kawnipi. We had very good luck with Walleye in the gaps between islands and were able to eat both fish breakfasts and fish dinners. My Son and Finance also caught lots of small mouth near the shores of the islands but we did not keep those. Some of the Walleye were quite shallow along the shore lines but I also jigged some up from fairly deep water in the channels. Compared to my son and his partner, I am a poor fisherman so when I was able to consistently catch Walleye the fishing was good!

By the way I did mean to type "with our extended RABCs" and not "with out extended RABCs". I assume everyone will ignore my typos but I guess that one was impactful.

Use must be down 75% at least than. I remember the busy season you wanted to get there before a long line formed at PP.
