I believe I imported a file into google earth that has sites, portages, etc. you should be able to find it.
+1 trying to carve a site out of nothing. It's uncomfortable and damages the area.

I also believe that rangers will help maintain rock fire pits at canpsites to make it easier for visitors to find existing campsites. A good campsite is found, not made! Have fun on your trip!

Boy, I doubt that. I could be proven wrong, but with the low number of rangers traversing the park and considering their duties of portage trail maintenance and time constraints, I'm sure it's rare for them to fix a rock fire pit unless they happen to be camping at the site. Of course, that's not unlike what most campers would do.

They're definitely operating on a skeleton crew. I'd imagine it's like you said, they maintain campsites they stay at and make sure campers know about the fire rings.

I know when I was up there with Eyedocron I rebuilt 3 or 4 rock fire pits.

I concur with all above. Also, at least at Prairie Portage, the park staff recommend using existing campsites. And it is just so much easier. Besides, the sites that have the characteristics of a good campsite pretty much all exist.

Hi, are there designated campsites in Quetico and are they on the available maps? Are the portages marked on the maps too? Thanks

Not designated but de facto, there are campsites. You can camp anywhere but I'll recommend using the existing sites just to not leave more trace.
Many are on fisher and mackenzie maps, as are portages, pictographs, and other features. They are usually close but not all sites are shown, and portages may be off a little. The Chrismar map is usually more accurate for portages, does not have sites.
Check with rangers at entry on portage conditions and changes. They do change as I discovered with a 6 year old Chrismar. Sometimes good sense is needed as well to find portage.

You can camp anywhere in the Quetico, but you would be foolish to camp anywhere that is not already established. Only twice in 25 trips have I done this, and as a last getting dark resort. Once in the mis S Chain and once on Fred lake. One of the advantages of the Quetico is that you do not have to make camp by noon to have a camp site. Go to a site called PP to see the camp sites, but this site prefers that we not reference another.
