Going east to west on the man chain can be tough if the westerlies are up. I had a difficult time against the wind in 2013. You might try going through Plough and camping on Emerald on the east end.

There's a great site there near the Plough portage. Then you can loop around and take the man chain home. Those narrow lakes are like wind tunnels. Emerald has gorgeous water.

Yep. Options are good there. If you find that you're traveling fast you add pieces as you go. If things are going slowly, you still have plenty of lakes to choose from. You won't be sorry you chose that area.

You have options, which is a good thing. You can decide on the fly.

Have you considered checking out the Falls Chain? It's one of the most beautiful places in the park, plus Kawnipi has a ton of options for fishing and exploration. Also, you could return through the chain of lakes between Louisa and McEwen. That route would be a tad more rigorous, however.

Hoping to get some opinions on an upcoming trip I'm planning. My current "loop" takes me from Cache bay, through the Man chain, then Emerald, Plough, Ottertrack, then maybe Jasper and Lily and into Cache again.

My second thoughts are now cutting out Emerald, Plough and such and going back through the Man chain. I've never been to this area but the more I look into it, the Man Chain just seems like the nicer area to explore. I always try to do loops and not a there-and-back trip, but was wondering what others think about this one. I've got 8 days for this one, thanks!
