Typically, an entry through Bhouse to reach Q Lake is easiest. I usually approach from Nym, teavel through Batch and camp in Pick Narrows. On day 2, portages will carry you into Pine Portage, Dore & Twin to rach upper Sturgeon. Dependking on wind and energy levels, you could make it through the Sturgeon Narrows to the Scripture Isl. area by the end of this day. The route has giod laker fishing, remnants of the logging era, pictos and moose sightings if you are lucky. You can loop out via Lonely, Walter, Jesse, Maria to return to Batch and eventually Nym. |

Questions... -Assuming you say the best EP is driving to the north side of Q, which is the best route from Duluth...Grand Rapids or International Falls? -the girls like rock jumping as much as beaches...should we target a Lake other than Sturgeon...Quetico maybe? -considering doing this Voyageur style = 4 person canoe like the Minnesota IV. We used that on our last trip with the girls. Youngest is 12 so she won't provide a lot of power. This unique solution worked well in BWCA. Does portaging a 23' canoe change your recommendations? Thanks! |

It is a shorter distance to travel from Duluth to the north side of Quetico (Atikokan) by going through International Falls. This is especially true if you choose to go in at the Beaverhouse entry point. (Quetico Lake) |

We drove up through Duluth and stayed at a motel in International Falls. Shorter that way. Coming back out, I highly recommend taking the extra hour or so to go east and see Kakabeka Falls, which is right on the road and beautiful. Special money saving tip: Since you have already paid for an Ontario Park the morning you come out, just show the papers to the office at K Falls for a free entry. |

Pickeral has nice beaches around The Pines. Jean has sand beaches on the south-central shore, and Jean is a great fishing lake. Cache Lake has a beach along the NE shore. Those are all the ones I know of in the park. |
