Two of my sons own their own coffee roasters, so coffee packets are not allowed on our trips to the BW. Instead, freshly roasted coffee beans, a Porlex stainless steel hand grinder and two Aeropresses come with us into the wilderness. The coffee is delicious! If it was just me, I'd bring packets of Cafe Bustelo or CS instant coffee. One packet of the CS makes a 16 oz cuppa joe. It's spendy but very good. Here's me waiting for someone to make me a cup of coffee...

I do love a good French Press! But I agree, you have to get coarse ground otherwise it doesn't turn out.
With that said, all of my friends have been ranting and raving about this Organo Gold coffee. Can't find it at a regular store so I bought on Amazon.
Tried a cup today, which is prompting this post, and I must say its actually amazing for instant coffee and is PH balanced. Very good.

I gave percolating a try about two years ago, but got tired of waiting for it. I now boil water then run it through an MSR filter sitting in my cup - by letting it sit a couple minutes then draining with a spoon its sort of like a french press.
I know its popular among many experienced paddlers, but I tried Via last summer and was quite disappointed. Instant just doesn't do it for me, and I actually like the ritual of making coffee (by a variety of methods) in the morning. I can see bringing a couple packs for coffee emergencies - like if a bear gets my beans, or if one of the Via lovers stops by my campsite for a visit - but I can't see a canoe trip where I'm so short on space that I can't pack an ounce or two of ground beans per day.

Always perked my coffee. Recently tried a cup from a french press and I must say that if I went solo; it would definitely go with me. (and may take it anyway) It will become my go-to at home from now on. I saw them mentioned on an old thread and should have tried one then. Great taste.

ok I admit it I am a coffee snob I have blind tasted the instant and can ID it in a moment The camp coffee set up is a simple funnel(my current is a rubber funnel) with a simple cone forever filter. Add ground coffee, and then slowly pour boiling water into the funnel. You can make a single cup in minutes with little fuss or mess

Camp coffee is my favorite cuppa, no matter how it's made. I look forward to it almost as much as the peace and quiet. We've settled on our percolator and have almost perfected it to our tastes. We always bring instant bags just in case though, and they're pretty terrible, but I'd rather have bad coffee in the forest on a pond than good coffee at work any time!

Press my my personal favorite way to make coffee. I have a single serving size press on my desk at work, and if I drank coffee on trips, I'd definitely take it with me.

At home and in the trail, I use cheap plastic Melita come with #2 paper filters. Cheap, easy, fast, delicious, simple, nothing to break. For coffee, my drug if choice is Bustello. Excellent deep taste at a super affordable price.

x2jmorris: "Can't believe no one mentioned a drip filter. Lightest way to do it outside of cowboy coffee and packets. "
Last trip I brought a collapsible silicone drip brewer. We packed Gene Hicks ground coffee and #2 cone filters. First cup gets 2 fresh tablespoons. Add another tablespoon and make the second cup. Start fresh for the third cup, etc. Only drawback is you can only make one cup at a time, but they are light enough to pack 2 or just wait in line.

"Best Way To Make Coffee" will always get answered enthusiastically. And you will get at least 30 different "best" methods.
I consider myself an extreme coffee snob, but for the 10-12 days each year that I am in the wilderness and have to pack and carry every item, I am very satisfied to have settled on Starbucks VIA Italian Roast packets for their light weight and simplicity.

I used to haul in a French press, but got away from it because the last couple trips we did were "travel" trips with some big portages so I wanted to cut weight. Still use a French press when car camping with my wife and have one in the house when we have time, usually on weekends. My buddies and I also use the Starbucks Via packets as well. The best instant coffee I have found. I recently tried "Trader Joes" brand instant. I drink my coffee black and their jarred instant isn't quite as good as the Via, but close enough at about a third of the price. They also offer instant packets like Via that also have cream/sugar already added. My one tripping partner has switched to that to save on space. I think those are like $1.99 for 10 packets. Again, considerably cheaper than Starbucks.

I should have added......If you go with the French press, Make sure you get a coarser ground coffee.....I usually get a medium grind.....less floaties in your cup.

We have always used Mount Hagen Organic instant coffee to save time/mess (decent flavor - easy to mix in cold or hot water). Last year we purchased an ultralight java drip from GSI Outdoors that attaches to your coffee mug. It's nice to enjoy the fuller flavor of the coffee from our own coffee grounds vs. instant, and the time it takes to make is the same as instant - just a little cleaning out of the grounds with the java drip. https://gsioutdoors.com/ultralight-java-drip.html

For the press users especially solo trippers a tip I've uysed and continue to use. I use my GSI GSI Personal Press, for heating "boil meals". I put the dry contents in the cup cup inside the carafe, add boiling water, cover and let it cook. The insulated cup in the insulated carafe hold the heat for 30 minutes easily!

PS: Best way to make coffee, even better than "cowboy" style, which I did enjoy greatly. Gotta have the oils visible on top! I team it often with a small, adjustable burr, hand grinder and grind just a bit finer than commercial Bunn machines coarse setting. bh

Best cup of coffee I ever had was pooba aka Christopher from Peru ground some beans from his shop in Peru. We first tried it through my sisters bunn... colored water. Then he pulled out his press and made the best cup of coffee I ever had. He left a bag of those beans with me... I cried like a baby when they ran out. Haha.

If you haven't tried Pocket Coffee I strongly recommend that you order some through Amazon immediately. They are single serving dark chocolates filled with a shot of Italian espresso. They are imported from Europe and familiar to most Europeans. Available in different size boxes and they also make great gifts. You have to eat them in one bite due to the liquid center. They are not a substitute for good coffee. You need both. Pocket Coffee
