Small Nalgene bottle(s) for us as well (we use very little oil) - the plastic ones off the shelf was just too much oil to be carrying around.
It should be noted we have switched to ghee when frying fish so oil use is very minimal

I've done two different methods. Both for solo or two people. If a larger group, I'd probably just do the original bottle in a bag like others have said.
For butter, I make ghee out of it first, then store is a stout Tupperware type container. Ghee is more temperature stable than regular butter and tastes really good too. It's basically like clarified butter, but cooked a little longer.
For oil, I've only taken a small amount in a little 3oz silicon travel shampoo container. I keep that in a ziplock, although it has not really leaked. I like that I can squirt just a little into the pan.

I bring 16 ounces in the original plastic container and put it inside of a ziplock bag. Never had a problem.

I switched over to one of the smaller nalgene bottles. Used to just leave it in the original bottle and throw it in a ziploc, but it got crushed in the food barrel one year... that was fun to clean up.

Nalgene. They come in a wide variety of sizes. Wipe before putting the top back on so the sides don’t get icky.

I just buy the plastic container off the shelf at the grocery store.
I used to put it in a ziploc for protection but it has never been needed.

It seems as though there is a consensus here. Maybe it was a simple question, but I approach outdoor adventures from the mindset of a lightweight backpacker. I've tried while backpacking to take small containers that always seem to fail.

I think the lightweight backpacker perspective is a good one, wanderingkansas. It's easier to start light and add the luxuries you want rather than go too heavy and regret the packing. I take way less on backpacking trips, that's for sure!
