A few of the ways the grate can be used!

The oven is Bemco Backpacker Oven

Not my photo, but yes ... its a reflector oven. Looks similar to an "Old Scout" model but the current design of that model doesn't have a bar across the top. Mine is home-built and uses no fasteners (only friction at the joints) and weighs 1 pound.

Pizza crust browning on my reflector oven.

We do not bring an extra grate just use the one there. Here is a picture of the fire area. Some times we have two cast iron fry pans and a pot on at the same time. I know that there is room for six ribeyes... I think the gap in the grate is about an inch. Sometimes the grate gets broken and you have a large gap like the picture shows.

OK, one more reminder, just in case - you'll want to bring a stove too just in case you enter under a fire ban.

I've read that all the campsites have a fire grate. My question is is the grate small enough to cook on or do we need to bring a smaller grill to cook on? Our first trip to BWCA will be at the end of this month!! Excited!!

Sorry I missed this one Pastor. Yes it is a reflector oven. We make just about anything the you can at home in a oven. Pizza, lasagna, hotdishes, bread, cornbread, muffins, cookies, cakes, brownies, We have a built in thermometer in the top and keep the temp at about 350 deg. If it gets too hot just move the oven back a ways, too cool and add some small sticks. It is very easy to cook with this oven.
