We use the vegetarian "ground beef" you can buy--the dehydrated stuff--for all of our beefy recipes (tacos, chili, etc.).

I always make our chile at home and then dehydrate the entire batch. Contains burger, beans, green chiles etc. At camp, add appropriate amount of water, boil, and let sit until rehydrated.

second year we have made this...none was left over.

Measure out water + 1/2 extra cup as the "Darn Good Chile" instructions called for.
added 2# dehydrated hamburger and heated to boiling.
added package on "Darn Good Chile"
simmered a few minutes and then cozied it up to allow it to continue to do its thing...stirring occasionally.
meanwhile in separate pot make up one box of large elbow macarroni and then cozied it up until the chile was done.
We still had some shredded cheese.
served in bowls.
It fed 6 comfortably.....

Can dehydrated ground beef be bought some where?
