We clean at the campsite on the canoe bottom and then paddle them a good distance before dumping them in the woods.

Hello, Can advise whether to clean fish in camp or not as I'm not fond of bears up close and personal. If not in camp, then where?

I would not clean in camp. The closest spot I trust is using the bottom of my canoe as a flat spot at the shore line. We then take all of the remains and place them on a distant shore for the birds and critters. This also cleans the canoe bottom.

I know that many if not most would say to clean the fish away from camp. I can attest to having many fish cleaned at the shore of our camp, then bring the guts to the woods. Never have had a problem.

quote MNDan: "I usually clean them in my tent to keep the bugs off me. My thermarest makes for a nice, flat cleaning surface which is nice. And if I'm feeling lazy I just leave the guts in the tent where the bears can't get them.
:)"
Good one :)

we clean at camp, if its a small amount just walk'm down the shoreline the gulls will take care of it in a short time. if its a larger amount canoe to an island or rock crop above water level or an opposite shore line with no campsites near by, i find burying them in the bw a bit difficult its mostly rock.

We always clean fish on a spot away from out camp site. We leave the remains for the local residents.
