I like this: Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon, (3L) 2010, $24.99. A lighter styled Cabernet Sauvignon with blackberries and some chocolate, it has a pinch of Zinfandel and Syrah which makes things interesting.

quote finman: "Me and a buddy will be taking our wives on a trip coming in Sept. My wife is a wine drinker, mainly Merlot. What are some good choices for boxed wines?
Thanks" I like Bota Box... they have a Merlot as well as a Malbec in a box that are decent. Black Box Merlot is also quite good.
Costco sells a Bota Box red but I cant remember what variety it is, but it is $3 cheaper than I can buy Bota Box for at my neighborhood liquor store.

quote TwoByGreenCanoe: "Black box." Very good.
Also Trader Joes has a red wine in a box that is good. Only 10 bucks.

Or you could consider PlatyPreserves. My wife and I use these every time and they are very rugged, completely leakproof, and the best part is you can put any wine in them you want!

My wife loves the small little Bota Box ones. Just the right size for canoeing.

quote shock: "finman you dont have say your wives are on the trip to ask about box wine .....none of us are here to judge :) (not knowing alot about wine) i would think your favorite in a flask/s would be just as good as any box wine ?" You got me!!! I should have put the wives part in quotations to throw everyone off!! Ok- so, my "wife" tried the Black Box Merlot this past weekend- I better keep trying. Not her flavor I guess. "Do they make a Malbec?" Her words, not mine I swear...

Boxed wine is really ideally packaged for tripping. Almost no weight. Packs compactly (ditch the box before you pack). And easy to sink in a net bag on a rope with just one stone - no air in the container. Not to mention the contents are hardly exposed to any oxygen so keeps better.
Last time I shopped for boxed wine for a trip the choices were many. I ended up with several small ones for variety.

I took Black Box Malbec on a river float last year. The reaction was, "Boxed wine should not taste this good." If my party at home went into overs, I would not be ashamed to bring it out for my wine snob friends after the really good stuff was gone.

Thanks! I did pick up some Black Box Merlot for this weekend - holy crap, it's four bottles of wine!!! Glad we are going to base camp- oh the headaches the girls could be facing!!! I weighed the whole package, comes in right under 7lbs. Taste test results will follow after the holiday weekend- thanks again!

I can attest that Peter Vella is the house wine at many a fine establishment around town. It runs about $15 for a 5ltr box. It isn't a 2005 Bordeaux but it is a decent wine at a price you can't beat with a stick.
