I did think about ducks [not "our" ducks, quack quack type ducks, but I think they would run amuck and stray from camp, whereas chickens can't swim, anyway I've never heard of a why did they chicken swim to the other side of the river joke before,so if you camped on an island they would stay with you. I am wondering if taking egg laying ducks might be a better option. They can handle the rainy weather better, and I am sure that if you talked with Kondos Outdoor's they could design a duck harness to help you paddle into the big headwind! or maybe they could do just enough to help you troll a lindy rig for walleyes?

To answer your question, yes I cut his head off with my old single shot.22, I'd like to say he was on the dead run at 100 yards but in all honesty he was standing about 75 feet away and I was resting the rifle against the barn. In my defense I was using open sights. It is a bitch getting older however, I can still hit a coyote at 100 yards [ with my .222 and open sights] but without my bifocals I can't hardly make out this stupid keyboard. FRED

Fred, you cut off a chicken's head with a .22? I shot a gopher with a stick once.

This is by far the best thread I've ever read.

Sirlips, nice recovery from the wife on fish dud.

Remind me not to be the next camper at any of our your campsites. :-)

The perfect post! I am always amused how people stress out about eggs and bugs when trip planning... this combines both phobias into one!

Eggs: pack 'em, take 'em and use 'em.
Bugs: if you have to ask, "yes they are really bad" and you should cancel your trip. Otherwise not a problem.

I did use one of my old green Coleman stoves to boil the water to scald them [that makes the feathers really easy to pluck]. We had one rooster who got really mean and used to jump on the grandkids and peck them and scratch them with his spurs somehow, wink wink, he slipped out of the pen so I took the .22 and cut his head off. My brother raises chickens that lay those Martha Steward pastel colored eggs. You know the green, blue, pink, and beige kind. Well it was time to cull the herd. The two youngest nephews were fighting with each other but both got a valuable lesson. One brought the other’s "pet" to grandpa whose job was at the chopping block. They no longer name their food...

Except chickens don't like big changes in their environment and will mostly likely stop laying for a period after being moved to new accommodations. Sorry.

You must have never butchered a chicken before. "

Actually I used to hlep do that over at my neighbors farm as a kid. We used to chop their heads off and then pluck them. And yes we then took all of the feathers out to the burn pile in the garden and burn them along with whatever garbage they had. Yes it does stink but so does a lot of other stuff when you burn it.

Would it be worth it to see if one or two chickens show up on scratch and dent?

I was going to buy some walmart chickens after reading the OP, but then i see that REI has chickens, im guessing that REI's chickens are a must have for any serious Bdud'er since they cost $135.99 a piece. They don't lay any more eggs, but they are name brand chickens.

For those that have purchased these REI chickens, do you think it was worth it? Im willing to spend the extra money as long as its really a name brand chicken.

I dont believe it is ethical to let the chickens free range on the natural bug selection of the Bdub, so i was hoping someone could post a thread on dehydrating chicken feed in a Excluber 9000 xl supreme super duty dehydrator. (i dont have one yet, but i will buy one if the instruction call for it, anything to save money on eggs...since im cheap)

Everyone sounds concerned about how to take eggs to the BWCA,how long they will keep, keep cold or not, how to pack them, ect, ect. Well I have the simple solution;;; take 4 live chickens, that's 4 eggs a day or a dozen every 3 days, when the weeks over you have fresh chicken on the grill, all you have to pack out is some dry feathers. You don't need to feed them, they will "free range" enough to get by, they really like bugs, and God knows there's plenty of bugs this year. FRED

A very simple solution to the comment about the chickens not laying if you take then into a differant enviroment; force yourself to stay on your trip untill they start laying again, probably won't have to extend your trip more than a week or so. FRED

As to your comment about the ethics of the chickens eating bugs;;; I'm pretty sure that they won't eat enough bugs to throw the ecosystem into a tail spin [just my own opinion, not based on any research] if all else fails you could order some of the freeze dried crickets and take them along. I would like to correct your grammar, instead of cheap I think you meant cheep, cheep, cheep. FRED

Don't forget you can use the feathers as pillow. Gotta use it all.
