It seems freeze dried is inherently healthy since it is low in fats of all kinds. Some do seem to have a lot of salt, but then they gave us salt tablets while hiking in Scouts.

Why does it have to be freeze dried, why cant it be dehydrated food. A person can make a multitude of dehydrated foods, meals that you cant buy in freeze dried form, can be dehydrated

Good article OldFingers, but like I said, I will stick to my dehydrating. I have to put a little effort into making the food, I cant just go over to Mills Fleet or WalMart and buy it freeze dried, But the taste of dehydrated food is so much better

I think there are good uses for each. I like the ease and flavor and extreme light weight of FD vegetables like corn, peas, green beans, and carrots. On the other hand, dehydrated found beef, pizza sauce, stews and hearty soups, is convenient and often tastier than equivalent FD. I personally like preparing meals in camp so dehydrated ingredients allows that. If back packing, I might go more FD for the weight and ease (I tend to be physically more tired at the end of a day of back packing than canoeing.

I can recommend a couple of sources for good, healthy dehydrated meals. These two are my current favorites:

Outdoor Herbivore

Hawk Vittles

Most are low in sodium. Many vegetarian/vegan selections at Outdoor Herbivore. A lot of organic ingredients. Also quite a few gluten free selections at both or ones that can be made gluten free by substituting ingredients.

I have mentioned a few specific ones I liked in my 2012 and 2013 trip reports, if you want to check those out.

Wilderness Dining is a source for many brands of freeze-dried and dehydrated foods. You can sort for organic, gluten free, etc. In the past I have eaten many of the Mary Jane's Farm (MJF) meals with good results.

I'm also partial to the ProBar meal replacement bars for lunch.

I don't think I have ever eaten any freeze dried foods in the Bwca but am thinking of looking into some for my fall trip. Can you give any recommendation for some tasty and healthy f.dried foods?
