With so many other options for powdered whole milk I would never choose Nestle. If corporations are people then Nestle is a psychopathic felon. End of rant.

I have tried several and I think Nido tastes the best. I use it for cereal, oatmeal, hot chocolate or anything that calls for milk.

KerryG, wanna compare notes someday? I'm no lover of Nestle brands, worked for them for 44 years, but that "psychopathic felon", may be a bit extreme. I stay away for personal reasons, but enjoy a ButterFinger once in awhile.

quote Swampturtle: "I am a recent convert to using powdered milk in recipes. I've used Nido in recipes for camping & home (some bread machine recipes use powdered milk). There are 2 kinds. Nido fortificato (fortified) which is regular whole milk powder-this is what I use. The other style is Nido kinder + 1 which is more like formula for infants with added nutrients.

If you go the Nido route, make sure you get Fortificado NOT Kinder! I found out the hard way that Kinder is honey flavored... made for some very interesting Alfredo Noodles :-(

I've had much better luck with nido vs carnation. Lots of instant pudding among other things.

Anybody ever use powdered milk added to recipes?

I tried it many years ago when I was a starving student but never mastered it. Always thought it tasted kind of strange, but it could have been my lack of skill as a cook. If so, what kind?

We take it for use in coffee & tea, in recipes that call for milk such as knorr noodles & sauce and to make whole milk for a granola breakfast. I order from Amazon, but you can find it at Walmart. It's definitely better than what I remember from years ago.

The Nido milk sounds interesting as Carnation is the only kind I have used. Looks worth a try. Will add it to pancake mix to make it heartier. Thanks for the link to the prior thread!

Most people I know on other backpacking forums recommend the Nido over any other brand out there.

Yes, just pre-measure into small zip lock, then add proper amount of water. Very easy.

Hoosier Farms whole dried milk powder, is my choice, also for other dried dairy products.
Nido and Carnation are both Nestle brands, big difference is whole milk powder (Nido), and skim milk powder.

My choice of Hoosier Farms is driven by quality and manufacturer reputation.

I don't mind carnation. I use it in creamy sauces and in hot granola.

I like carnation but add a non-dairy creamer to enhance the flavor.

My choice too. When on a hiking trip, it goes into my morning oatmeal and dried fruit for the extra calories.

This could get me to start taking oatmeal again. Stopped when it seemed to be just carbs that never lasted very long into the morning. The powdered whole milk described so far sounds like it will make it heartier and longer lasting.

I use more powdered sour cream and buttermilk than whole milk. Another suggestion for ya! Cooking and baking, still can't drink the stuff (powdered milk).

I found I don't mind drinking Nido. Since I use 2% at home, cold cereal every morning, I've thought about mixing Carnation and Nido - though if it wouldn't probably clog my heart for good I'd use heavy cream.

I can vouch for the high quality of Hoosier hill farm dried dairy products. I have not tried their powdered milk, but other products I have tried are top notch.

In addition to fruit in your oatmeal, throw in some nuts for added protein.

I think we can all agree on this.
