I remember my first 2 canoe trips in the late 60's down the Allagash. These were month long trips and the trip leader (my Algebra teacher) had brought a reflector oven for desserts and biscuits. I have been looking for a cookbook for using them without any luck. My thought is that perhaps, there are some trippers than bring them and might share their recipes! Thank you in advance!!

No to over simplify but just about anything that will fit in the oven and cook at 350 to 400 degrees will work. Cake, biscuit, rolls, breads, and muffin mixes, as well as scratch dough/batters bake up fine.

He's right, you know. I will add that we have had mine along on a few trips, now, but the only thing we've tried (and enjoyed!) so far has been brownies. Since mine was built with a fairly heavy gauge aluminum that makes the choice on its inclusion somewhat significant, it would be nice to branch out a bit and do more main courses... so I look forward to seeing some ideas along that line here.

I think that a search here on 'reflector oven' will turn up some dish ideas, too, among the build plans and technique suggestions.

My all time favorite is PIZZA. I dehydrate pizza sauce mix in dehydrated onions, mushrooms, dehydrated bell peppers, sliced real thin deer summer sausage, lots of garlic powder and of course cheese. I just use Bisquick crusts. Takes a while to make and bake but words to live by;;; a full tummied shrepa is a happy sherpa. I'm really considering a DIY really small reflector oven for my solo trips. I was able to make a double layover carrot cake a few years ago. I used a carrot cake mix and made cream cheese icing. I did it on the second night of a trip so keeping cream cheese and butter cool wasn't really a problem. I baked each round separately, then iced it. It was delicious. Took a few hours but was well worth the effort for a group.

I want to join your tripping group. That sounds amazing.

I have used this one and another in the past. The other brand came in a plastic red jug, that you added water to and shook up and poured in the pan. I got it at our Hy-Vee stores.

I sent you two emails with quite a few recipes on both of them as attachments. Hope you enjoy trying them all out.
